Hidden fees to watch out for

Beyond the annual fee, other charges can add up.

Cash withdrawals cost 1–2% of the amount (minimum €2.50 to €5). Keytrade is the exception: ATM withdrawals inside the euro zone are free there. Outside the euro zone a Keytrade withdrawal costs €2 plus 0.40% of the amount plus 1.40% FX.

Payments outside the euro zone are charged at 1.5% by most traditional Belgian banks, 1.40% at Keytrade. Europabank and Hello bank! do not publish that figure on their product page: it sits in the banking conditions and the fee list.

The interest rate (9.50 to 10.20%) only applies if you choose instalment repayment. If you repay in full each month, no interest is charged. The Europabank, Keytrade and Hello bank! cards work on deferred debit: the amount is taken the following month, interest free.

Which card for which profile?

The best choice depends on your situation.

Student (18-24): Argenta Mastercard, free until your 25th birthday, then €24/year.

Tight budget, everyday use: Europabank Visa (€0/year, no condition) or Keytrade Visa Classic if you pay at least once a month.

Family with high spending: Beobank Visa Extra (1% cashback on all purchases, capped at €100 per calendar year).

Loyal customer of a major bank: stay with your bank if the package benefits (insurance, savings account) offset the €25–30/year.

Frequent traveller: a traditional card alone isn't enough. Combine with a Revolut or N26 for non-euro zone payments.

Frequently asked questions

Which Belgian bank offers the cheapest credit card?

Europabank, with a Visa at €0/year, no usage condition and no current account required with them. Next comes Keytrade Bank, free as long as you make 12 payments a year (otherwise €25/year).

Is the Beobank cashback card worth it?

The 1% cashback covers the €20/year fee from roughly €2,000 of yearly card spending. It is capped at €100 per calendar year and excludes withdrawals. The first year is free if you make a first payment within three months.

Can I use my Belgian credit card everywhere in Europe?

Yes. Belgian Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted throughout the euro zone with no additional fees. Outside the euro zone (Switzerland, UK…), exchange fees of 1.5% apply, 1.40% at Keytrade.

How to increase my credit card limit?

Contact your bank with proof of higher income or a clean payment history. Standard limits range from €1,250 (Argenta, Keytrade) to €5,000 (Beobank, Hello bank!).

What to do if my credit card is stolen in Belgium?

Call Card Stop immediately on 078 170 170 (24/7). This Belgian number instantly blocks your card. Then file a police report and contact your bank. At Keytrade and Europabank, blocking and replacement are free.

Does a Belgian credit card work in the United States?

Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard in the US. If you regularly travel to the US, prefer a Visa card (ING, Beobank, Keytrade). Also check the geographic setting: the Europabank card is only enabled for the European region by default.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
