Credit card insurance in Belgium: what your card actually covers

Comparison of insurance included with Belgian credit cards. Trip cancellation, purchase protection, limits and exclusions bank by bank.

Your credit card includes insurance. But which policies, with what limits, and under what conditions? After reviewing the general terms of seven Belgian banks, one thing is clear: not all cards are equal, and coverage gaps between them are massive. Here is what each card actually covers, with hard numbers.

What insurance comes with a Belgian credit card?

Gold and Platinum cards bundle between two and four guarantees. Here they are, ranked by how often they appear in Belgian contracts.

Trip cancellation insurance reimburses non-recoverable costs if you must cancel a trip due to illness, accident, or death of a close relative. Standard limit: 5,000 to 6,000 euros per claim. Universal condition: you must have paid a significant share of the trip with the card (70% at BNP Paribas Fortis, 75% at Keytrade, the full amount at some others).

Purchase protection covers theft with forced entry and accidental damage on goods bought with the card. Duration: 90 days as standard, 120 days at BNP Paribas Fortis. The exclusions bite hard: smartphones, jewellery, and fragile items are almost always excluded.

Medical assistance abroad covers hospitalisation, repatriation, and emergency medical expenses during a trip. At Belfius, the hospitalisation limit after an accident is 12,500 euros. The ING Mastercard Gold reaches 200,000 euros for serious accidents (death or permanent disability).

Extended warranty adds one to two years to the manufacturer's warranty on electronics and household appliances. KBC and Beobank offer this coverage. On a 600-euro dishwasher, that is real value. On a t-shirt, not so much.

Comparison: which card offers the best coverage?

Differences between banks are substantial. This table summarises the main guarantees of the most common cards in Belgium.

Two cards stand out. The Keytrade Visa Platinum dominates on travel coverage with 200,000 euros for accidents and 5,000 euros cancellation, all potentially free of annual fees. The ING Mastercard Gold offers solid balance between cancellation (6,000 euros), purchase protection (4,000 euros per claim), and accident coverage.

The Beobank Visa Extra, despite its cashback strengths, offers neither trip cancellation nor assistance: its insurance is limited to purchase protection and extended warranty.

Why your Classic card probably covers nothing

This is the most common trap. Most Belgians hold a Classic card, not a Gold. Yet most Classic cards include no insurance at all.

At BNP Paribas Fortis, the Visa Classic covers strictly nothing. Same at vdk bank. The only notable exception: the ING Visa Classic offers a basic insurance package, making it an outlier on the market.

What this means for you: if you are counting on your card to cover a trip without checking its level (Classic, Gold, Platinum), you risk travelling with no safety net. Check the exact type of your card before booking.

Three traps of card insurance in Belgium

Trap 1: the payment condition. Every bank requires the trip to be paid in whole or in part with the card. A bank transfer for the hotel and a Bancontact payment for the flight? The cancellation insurance does not apply, even if you hold a Gold card.

Trap 2: purchase protection exclusions. Mobile phones, jewellery, and glasses are excluded at nearly all Belgian banks. The deductible ranges from 75 euros (Beobank) to 100 euros (Keytrade). For a 150-euro purchase, almost nothing remains after the deductible.

Trap 3: the cumulative annual cap. At ING, purchase protection is capped at 8,000 euros per year across all claims. At Beobank, it is 2,500 euros per claim. A single incident can consume your entire annual coverage.

Should you buy travel insurance on top of your card?

The answer depends on the amount and destination. For a weekend in Barcelona at 400 euros paid with your Gold card, the card insurance is probably sufficient. Costs are covered, repatriation too.

For a 5,000-euro trip to Japan, no. Cancellation limits (5,000 to 6,000 euros) barely cover the amount, and medical costs in Japan can reach tens of thousands of euros. Your card's medical assistance does not always cover hospital bills outside Europe beyond 12,500 euros.

The most cost-effective strategy: use your card insurance as a base and take out supplementary insurance for trips above 2,500 euros or outside Europe. Several Belgian insurers offer plans that complement card coverage without duplicating it.

Frequently asked questions

Gold and Platinum cards generally include trip cancellation insurance (3,000 to 6,000 euros), purchase protection (90 to 120 days), medical assistance abroad, and sometimes extended warranty. Classic cards often offer no coverage at all.

Rarely. Limits remain modest (5,000 to 6,000 euros for cancellation), deductibles add up quickly (75 to 100 euros), and exclusions are numerous. For trips over 3,000 euros or long-haul destinations, a dedicated travel insurance policy fills the gaps better.

Yes, without exception. Each bank sets a minimum: 70% of the amount at BNP Paribas Fortis, 75% at Keytrade, or the full amount at some others. If you pay by bank transfer, the insurance does not apply.

Most Belgian Classic cards include no insurance. Notable exception: the ING Visa Classic offers a basic package. At BNP Paribas Fortis and vdk bank, the Visa Classic covers nothing at all.

The Keytrade Bank Visa Platinum combines travel accident coverage (200,000 euros), cancellation (5,000 euros per trip), and assistance (25,000 euros), all potentially free with 12 transactions per year. It offers the best coverage-to-cost ratio on the Belgian market.

No. Almost all Belgian cards exclude mobile phones and jewellery from purchase protection. Only household appliances, consumer electronics, and IT equipment are generally covered.

From 5 euros per year (Cofidis Mastercard Gold) to 78 euros (Belfius Mastercard Gold). The Keytrade Visa Platinum is free with 12 annual transactions. Price does not always reflect coverage quality.

It depends on the card. The Keytrade Visa Platinum covers the spouse and children under 25 living at the same address. The ING Mastercard Gold covers the spouse and children. At Belfius, only the cardholder is covered unless stated otherwise.
