Credit card limits in Belgium: spending caps by bank

From EUR 1,250 to EUR 10,000/month depending on the bank. Comparison of ING, KBC, Belfius, BNP limits and how to adjust yours.

Your credit card limit in Belgium depends on three factors: the bank, the card tier, and your financial profile. Between a Belfius White at EUR 1,250 per month and a Keytrade Platinum at EUR 10,000, the gap is substantial. This guide compares spending caps bank by bank and walks you through the process of adjusting them.

What are the spending caps at each Belgian bank?

Monthly limits vary widely depending on issuer and card tier. Here is what the main Belgian banks offer as of April 2026.

BankCardMonthly capAnnual fee
INGVisa ClassicEUR 2,500EUR 22
INGMastercard GoldEUR 5,000EUR 60
BNP Paribas FortisVisa/MC ClassicEUR 2,500EUR 27
BNP Paribas FortisVisa/MC GoldEUR 5,000EUR 62
KBCSilverEUR 2,500EUR 27
KBCGoldEUR 5,000EUR 55
KBCPlatinumEUR 7,500EUR 200
BelfiusMC WhiteEUR 1,250EUR 15
BelfiusMC GoldEUR 2,500EUR 78
ArgentaMC ClassicEUR 1,250EUR 24
ArgentaMC Gold PremiumEUR 5,000EUR 60
BeobankVisa ExtraEUR 2,400EUR 20
KeytradeVisa ClassicEUR 2,000EUR 0*
KeytradeVisa GoldEUR 5,000EUR 0*
KeytradeVisa PlatinumEUR 10,000EUR 0*

*Keytrade: free provided you make 12 transactions per year.

Two things stand out. Belfius charges the highest Gold card fee on the market (EUR 78) for a cap of just EUR 2,500 — the same as a Classic at ING or KBC. Keytrade Bank offers the highest limits with potentially free cards, but requires a full banking relationship (securities or current account).

How does your bank set your limit?

The limit on your contract is not arbitrary. Every Belgian bank follows a process governed by consumer credit law (Book VII of the Code of Economic Law).

Three elements determine your cap:

  • Your net income — most banks apply a ratio: the monthly cap does not exceed 30 to 50% of your net income. A net salary of EUR 2,500 typically gives access to a EUR 2,500 limit.
  • Your outstanding loans — the bank must consult the Central Individual Credit Register (CCP) at the National Bank of Belgium. This file lists all consumer and mortgage loans held by residents. If you already have a car loan and another card, your remaining borrowing capacity shrinks.
  • Your track record — a loyal client with no incidents gets a raise more easily than a new applicant. Late payments recorded in the CCP's negative section block any increase.

What this means for you: your limit is not fixed, but it reflects your real capacity. Requesting EUR 5,000 with a EUR 1,800 salary and a running car loan will likely be turned down.

How to increase your credit card limit

The procedure varies by bank, but the pattern is the same everywhere.

Permanent increase — contact your bank (app, branch, email). Have ready: your last three payslips or tax assessment notice, a statement of fixed expenses. The bank queries the CCP, assesses your solvency and responds within 5 to 10 business days. At Keytrade, the request goes by email to credit@keytradebank.com. At KBC and ING, the mobile app lets you initiate the process.

Temporary increase — for a trip or a large purchase. Most banks grant a 30-day raise, up to twice a year. At CBC and KBC, the change takes effect immediately in the mobile app. At BNP Paribas Fortis, go through Easy Banking Web or call the card service. At Nagelmackers, in-branch only.

30 days
Max duration of a temporary increase

One thing to watch: a temporary increase is not free extra credit. You will need to repay the full amount by your regular due date. If you spend EUR 8,000 on a limit temporarily raised to EUR 10,000 while your normal cap is EUR 5,000, the bill will be EUR 8,000, not EUR 5,000.

Can you voluntarily lower your limit?

Yes, and it is an underused strategy. Every Belgian bank allows you to reduce your monthly cap — often instantly via the app.

Lowering your limit protects against three risks: fraud (a EUR 1,000 cap limits the damage if your card is stolen), impulse spending (a real psychological safeguard), and credit file impact (unused credit is still recorded credit, which can weigh against you when applying for a mortgage).

In practice, if your Gold card has a EUR 5,000 cap but you never use more than EUR 1,500, reducing it to EUR 2,000 is common sense. You can always raise it again when needed.

Which card for your spending level?

ProfileRecommended capSuggested card
Student, first jobEUR 1,250Belfius White (EUR 15/yr)
Employee, everyday spendingEUR 2,500ING Visa Classic (EUR 22/yr)
Manager, regular purchasesEUR 5,000Keytrade Visa Gold (free)
High spender, frequent travellerEUR 7,500–10,000KBC Platinum or Keytrade Platinum

For a high cap at the best price, Keytrade Bank is hard to beat. The Visa Platinum with EUR 10,000 cap and no annual fee (under conditions) outperforms Platinum cards from major banks that charge EUR 150–200/year for an equivalent or lower limit. Our guide to affordable cards details the most economical options.

If cashback matters as much as your limit, the Beobank Visa Extra combines a EUR 2,400 cap with 1% cashback. Students can check our student guide for cards accessible without a fixed income. Frequent travellers will find the best options for spending abroad in our travel card guide.
