How to Cancel a Credit Card in Belgium: Procedure, Deadlines and Rights

How to cancel your Belgian credit card: one-month maximum legal notice, procedure by bank, CCP impact and pre-cancellation checklist.

Paying an annual fee for a credit card you no longer use? Or switching banks and your current card has become redundant? Belgian law protects you: cancelling a credit card is free and the notice period cannot exceed one month. Still, a few steps deserve attention to avoid unexpected charges or recurring payments falling through the cracks.

With roughly 1.8 million credit cards in circulation — just 0.18 per capita according to 2023 data — Belgium remains a debit-dominated market. If you hold a credit card, it should genuinely serve a purpose.

What is the legal notice period for cancelling a credit card?

The maximum notice period is one month. Article VII.98, paragraph 1, of the Code of Economic Law (CDE) governs the termination of open-ended credit facilities — the legal category that covers Belgian credit cards. Consumers may cancel at any time, free of charge. If the contract stipulates a notice period, it cannot exceed one month from the date the bank receives the letter.

The bank, on its side, must provide at least two months' notice if it decides to terminate the contract. No termination fee may be charged to the consumer — the law explicitly prohibits this.

How to cancel step by step

The procedure follows five stages, regardless of the issuer.

  1. List your recurring payments. Streaming subscriptions, insurance, tolls, online shops with your card on file. Update your payment details with each provider before cancelling.

  2. Clear the outstanding balance. Repay the remaining amount on the card. If any balance is left unpaid after closure, the bank may demand immediate repayment and apply a replacement indemnity capped at 1% of the outstanding capital (Articles VII.96 and VII.97 CDE).

  3. Submit your cancellation request. By registered mail to keep a dated proof, or via your bank's secure online messaging if accepted. Include your card number, customer ID and desired closure date.

  4. Destroy the physical card. Cut it in two across the chip and magnetic stripe. Some banks ask you to return the cut card along with your cancellation letter — check the terms and conditions.

  5. Confirm the closure. Wait for the bank's written confirmation. Check your statement to ensure no further transactions are debited. Verify your CCP file via itsme on the NBB website to confirm the contract has been removed.

Which procedure for which bank?

Practical arrangements vary. Most traditional banks still require a registered letter, but digital channels are gaining ground.

BankCancellation channelTypical timeframe
INGRegistered letter or branch2 to 4 weeks
BNP Paribas FortisEasy Banking secure messaging or branch1 to 3 weeks
KBCKBC Mobile (messaging) or branch1 to 2 weeks
BelfiusOnline, app or branch1 to 2 weeks
BeobankRegistered letter or branch2 to 4 weeks
ArgentaArgenta app, registered letter or branch1 to 3 weeks
RevolutIn-app deactivation (instant)Immediate
N26In-app deactivation (instant)Immediate

Neobanks do not issue credit cards under Belgian credit law — their cards work as debit or prepaid. Deactivation therefore does not affect the CCP.

Does cancellation affect your CCP file?

No, provided there is no payment default. The Central Credit Register at the National Bank of Belgium manages two separate sections. The positive section, which lists all active credits, is updated after the contract closes: the entry disappears once the balance reaches zero and the cancellation is effective.

The negative section only comes into play if you have accumulated payment arrears (three missed instalments or three months of unpaid debt). In that case, the registration persists for 1 year after full settlement, or 10 years without repayment — regardless of the cancellation. If your record is clean, cancelling has no impact on your ability to obtain new credit later.

To check your situation, consult your CCP file free of charge on the NBB website via itsme or eID reader.

What are the alternatives to full cancellation?

Cancelling is not always the best option. Three scenarios are worth considering.

Switch to a free card. If you use your credit card occasionally — travel, car rental, online purchases — ask for a downgrade to a card with no annual fee. Belfius offers a Standard Mastercard at EUR 0/year under certain conditions, and several free credit cards exist in Belgium.

Freeze the card temporarily. Most banking apps allow you to block the card without cancelling it. Useful if you are undecided or prefer to keep it as a backup while abroad.

Switch to a prepaid card. Revolut, N26 or Wise offer cards with no CCP check, usable wherever Visa or Mastercard are accepted. No credit, no annual fee on basic plans — and reduced foreign exchange fees.

What to do if the bank disputes your cancellation

If the bank refuses the cancellation, applies unjustified fees or delays the closure, three remedies are available.

  1. Internal complaint to the bank's complaints department — mandatory before any mediation.
  2. Ombudsfin, the Belgian banking ombudsman, handles disputes free of charge. Average resolution time: roughly 90 days. Complaints can be filed by mail or online form.
  3. FPS Economy — Economic Inspection to report a breach of the Code of Economic Law, particularly if the bank charges termination fees prohibited by Article VII.98.

Keep a copy of your registered letter and all written exchanges. For contracts concluded remotely (online or by phone), you have a 14-day right of withdrawal (Art. VII.83 CDE) without justification.

Frequently asked questions

Nothing. Article VII.98 of the Code of Economic Law prohibits banks from charging termination fees for open-ended credit facilities, which includes credit cards. Only a replacement indemnity (0.5 to 1% of the remaining capital) may apply if an outstanding balance remains unpaid.

The contractual notice period cannot exceed one month from when the bank receives your letter. Some banks process the request faster, sometimes within a few business days for in-branch closures.

It depends on the bank. Belfius, KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis accept requests online or via their app. Argenta also allows cancellation through its app. ING and Beobank generally require a registered letter or an in-branch visit. Neobanks like Revolut and N26 allow instant deactivation directly in their app.

No, not negatively. The CCP removes the entry from the positive register once the contract is closed and the balance is cleared. Only a prior payment default triggers a negative registration, which remains visible for 1 year after settlement (10 years without settlement). The cancellation itself is neutral.

Ideally, yes. If a balance remains unpaid after cancellation, the bank may demand immediate repayment and charge a replacement indemnity capped at 1% of the outstanding capital (0.5% if less than one year before the theoretical maturity), under Articles VII.96 and VII.97 of the CDE.

They will fail. The bank does not automatically redirect them to another payment method. Before cancelling, contact each provider (streaming, subscriptions, insurance) to update your payment details. Allow two to three weeks for all changes to take effect.

Yes. For contracts concluded remotely (online or by phone), Article VII.83 of the CDE grants a 14-calendar-day right of withdrawal, free of charge and without justification. Any capital already used must be repaid within 30 days of the withdrawal.

If you still use a credit card occasionally, switching to a fee-free card (such as the Belfius Standard Mastercard or Beobank Visa Classic) avoids the annual fee while keeping payment flexibility. Full cancellation is preferable if you no longer need revolving credit at all.
