Gold Credit Cards in Belgium: Is the Extra Cost Worth It?

Comparison of Belgian Gold cards — KBC, ING, Belfius, BNP, Crelan, Argenta and Beobank. Annual fees, included insurance and verdict by spending profile.

You already pay for a Classic credit card and your bank is suggesting an upgrade to Gold. The pitch is well-rehearsed: travel insurance, higher limit, purchase protection. But with 50 to 150 EUR in annual fees, is the extra cost actually justified? This comparison examines the seven main Gold cards available in Belgium, with real coverage figures and a verdict by spending profile.

How much does a Gold card cost per bank in Belgium?

Fees vary threefold depending on the issuer. Some banks bundle the Gold into an account package, making comparison less straightforward than a simple annual price.

BankCardFeeMonthly limit
BeobankVisa Gold5 EUR/year1,250 – 5,000 EUR
INGMastercard Gold4.25 EUR/month (~51 EUR/year)5,000 EUR
BelfiusMastercard Gold4.18 EUR/month (~50 EUR/year)2,500 EUR
BNP Paribas FortisMastercard Gold4.25 EUR/month + Easy Guide Pack (5.50 EUR/month)5,000 EUR
KBCMastercard Gold6 EUR/month (~72 EUR/year)5,000 EUR
ArgentaMastercard Gold6.95 EUR/month (~83 EUR/year)5,000 EUR
CrelanVisa GoldIncluded in Excellence Pack (8 EUR/month)5,000 EUR
BeobankFlying Blue Premium150 EUR/year5,000 EUR

Since January 2026, ING charges its credit cards monthly — the total amount remains similar, but monthly billing makes the expense less visible in your statements.

At BNP Paribas Fortis, the Mastercard Gold costs 4.25 EUR/month on top of the Easy Guide Pack (5.50 EUR/month for the current account), totalling 9.75 EUR/month (~117 EUR/year). This makes it the most expensive Gold on the Belgian market when combining account and card fees.

What insurance is included in a Belgian Gold card?

This is the main reason to upgrade to Gold. Coverage varies considerably from one bank to another — some only cover purchases, others offer a complete travel package.

The KBC Mastercard Gold stands out with eight distinct insurance policies: trip cancellation, international assistance, travel accident, baggage delay/loss, flight/train delay, missed connections, purchase protection and extended warranty. It is the most complete package on the Belgian market.

At the opposite end, the Argenta Mastercard Gold only offers basic purchase protection — no travel insurance despite costing 83 EUR/year. Poor value for money for travellers.

Does Gold card travel insurance replace dedicated coverage?

For short stays in Europe (under 90 days), Belgian Gold card coverage is sufficient in most cases. Cancellation due to illness, lost baggage, repatriation assistance: the basics are covered at KBC, ING and Crelan.

Three limitations to know before travelling without additional insurance.

Modest cancellation cap. Maximum 5,000 to 6,000 EUR per trip per family. A ten-day trip for two to the Maldives exceeds this cap — you would only be partially reimbursed.

Card payment condition. Most banks require the trip to be largely paid with the Gold card: 70% at KBC, 50% at Belfius. A flight booked with miles or a gift voucher will generally not be covered.

Standard exclusions. Risky sports (off-piste skiing, deep-sea diving), pregnancy beyond 26 weeks, unstabilised pre-existing medical conditions. These exclusions are identical to dedicated insurance, but Gold card medical caps remain lower.

For long-haul travel, large families or sporting activities, dedicated travel insurance (between 30 and 80 EUR per trip in Belgium) usefully complements the Gold card rather than replacing it.

Which profile justifies a Gold card?

The calculation is straightforward: if the Gold fee is lower than what you would pay in separate insurance, the Gold pays for itself.

Gold is justified if you travel at least twice a year. Trip cancellation insurance costs 25 to 50 EUR per trip purchased separately. From the second trip onwards, a Gold card at 50-72 EUR/year becomes more economical than ad-hoc insurance. KBC and ING offer the best coverage-to-price ratio in this case.

Gold is not justified for purely domestic use. If you don't travel and only use your card for purchases in Belgium, the purchase protection of a Classic card is sufficient in most cases. Exception: the Beobank Visa Gold at 5 EUR/year, whose marginal cost makes the extended warranty worthwhile even without travelling.

The Flying Blue Premium profile. The 150 EUR annual fee of the Beobank Flying Blue pays off from approximately 10,000 EUR in annual card spending (i.e. 1.25 Miles per euro, so 12,500 Miles — a European return trip). If you spend less than 800 EUR/month by card or don't fly Air France-KLM, the cost exceeds the value of accumulated miles.

Gold card vs neobank: which choice for travel?

A Revolut Metal (17.99 EUR/month) or N26 You (9.90 EUR/month) also include travel insurance. The difference: they additionally offer free ATM withdrawals abroad and zero exchange fees — two items where Belgian Gold cards still charge 5 EUR + 1% per withdrawal and the ECB exchange rate.

For frequent travellers who withdraw cash abroad, the combination of neobank (withdrawals + exchange) + Belgian Classic card (credit line) can work out cheaper than a Gold alone. Our Revolut vs N26 comparison details the travel fees for each option.

However, neobanks do not offer a real credit line — it is debit only. If you need monthly deferred payment with a 5,000 EUR limit, only a traditional bank Gold card provides this.

Our verdict: which Gold card to choose in Belgium?

Three cards stand out depending on your profile.

Best value for travellers: KBC Mastercard Gold (72 EUR/year). Eight insurance policies, cancellation up to 6,000 EUR, international assistance and 2-year extended warranty. The most complete package at an intermediate price.

Minimal budget with purchase protection: Beobank Visa Gold (5 EUR/year). Impossible to find cheaper. 12-month extended warranty and online purchase protection included. No travel insurance — reserved for domestic use or complemented by separate insurance.

Regular Air France-KLM traveller: Beobank Flying Blue Premium (150 EUR/year). Only worthwhile if you spend more than 800 EUR/month by card and actually use the Miles. The complete travel insurance justifies the price if you fly at least 3-4 times per year.

For cards without high fees, a Classic at 0-27 EUR/year is sufficient if travel insurance does not concern you. Upgrading to Gold only makes sense once you actually use the included coverage — not before.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Gold credit card cost in Belgium?

Between 5 EUR and 150 EUR per year. The Beobank Visa Gold is the cheapest at 5 EUR/year but without travel insurance. Gold cards with full insurance cost 50 to 96 EUR/year at ING, Belfius, KBC, BNP Paribas Fortis and Argenta.

What is the best Belgian Gold card for travel?

The KBC Mastercard Gold at 72 EUR/year offers eight insurance policies including trip cancellation (6,000 EUR), international assistance, baggage delay and extended warranty. The Crelan Visa Gold adds rental car insurance, but its pack at 96 EUR/year is more expensive.

Is Gold card travel insurance enough?

For stays under 90 days in Europe: generally yes. Limitations appear for long trips, outside Europe, or risky sporting activities. The cancellation cap does not exceed 6,000 EUR — insufficient for an expensive family holiday.

What is the difference between Classic and Gold cards?

The monthly limit goes from 2,500 to 5,000 EUR. Included insurance makes the real difference: a Classic offers basic fraud protection, a Gold adds trip cancellation, purchase protection and often extended warranty on electronic devices.

Is the Beobank Visa Gold at 5 EUR/year worth it?

For online purchase protection and extended warranty, the value for money is unbeatable. It is not suitable for travellers: no travel insurance or assistance is included. At 5 EUR/year, the risk is zero — it pays for itself from the first device under extended warranty.

Can you get a free Gold card in Belgium?

Belfius offers the first year free to those under 29. At BNP Paribas Fortis, the Gold costs 4.25 EUR/month on top of the Easy Guide Pack (5.50 EUR/month). No Belgian bank offers a completely free Gold card without age conditions.

Is the Beobank Flying Blue Premium at 150 EUR/year worth it?

It pays off from 10,000 EUR in annual spending (12,500 Miles = a European return trip). Below 800 EUR/month in spending or without Air France-KLM flights, the cost exceeds the value of accumulated miles.

Are ATM withdrawals free with a Gold card?

No. Most Belgian Gold cards charge 5 to 6 EUR fixed fees plus 1% of the amount per withdrawal. For frequent withdrawals, a debit card or neobank remains more economical.
