Visa or Mastercard in Belgium: which card should you pick?

Visa or Mastercard in Belgium? Acceptance, fees, insurance and network by bank — data-driven comparison to make the right choice.

Visa or Mastercard: the question comes up every time a Belgian opens a bank account. The short answer — it barely matters. Both networks are accepted at the same merchants, offer the same security levels, and apply nearly identical exchange rates. What actually matters is the bank issuing your card.

Are Visa and Mastercard the same product, sold differently?

Visa and Mastercard are neither banks nor card issuers. They are payment networks. They provide the technical infrastructure connecting your bank to the merchant's terminal. Your bank — ING, KBC, Belfius — sets the fees, limits, and insurance.

Visa holds 52% of the global credit card market in 2025, versus 22% for Mastercard (source: WalletHub, 2025). In transaction volume, Visa processes USD 14.5 trillion per year, Mastercard USD 9.2 trillion. This global dominance doesn't translate into a noticeable everyday difference in Belgium. Both networks work on the same terminals, at the same merchants.

Choosing between Visa and Mastercard is like choosing between two highways leading to the same destination. The car — your bank card — and the toll — the fees — depend on the dealer, not the highway.

Which Belgian bank offers Visa or Mastercard?

Unlike other countries, Belgian banks generally don't let you pick your network. Here's the breakdown:

BankCredit networkDebit networkAnnual credit cost
INGVisaMastercard DebitEUR 29/year
KBCMastercardMastercard DebitEUR 25/year
BelfiusMastercardMastercard DebitEUR 26/year
BNP Paribas FortisMastercardMastercard DebitEUR 27/year
ArgentaMastercardMastercard DebitEUR 24/year
BeobankVisa or MastercardMastercard DebitEUR 20-30/year
CrelanVisaVisa DebitVariable
Keytrade BankVisaMastercard DebitEUR 0 (free Gold)

What this means for you: if you bank with KBC, you get a Mastercard. With ING, a Visa. The network shouldn't drive your choice of bank — annual fees, customer service and perks matter more.

Keytrade Bank stands out: a free Visa Gold with travel insurance included. It's the most generous offer on the Belgian market, regardless of network.

Mastercard Debit replaces Maestro: what changes?

Since July 2023, Belgian banks have been gradually replacing Maestro cards with Mastercard Debit. More than 10 million cards are affected (source: Mastercard Newsroom, 2021). The migration spans five years — by 2028, Maestro will be gone.

The new Mastercard Debit card combines two functions on a single physical card: Bancontact for payments within Belgium and Mastercard Debit for international and online payments.

Three concrete changes for cardholders:

  • Online purchases — Maestro was often rejected on international e-commerce sites. Mastercard Debit works everywhere Mastercard is accepted, including Amazon, Booking and non-Belgian websites.
  • Payments abroad — Acceptance doubles compared to Maestro. Mastercard Debit works in 210 countries, versus roughly 100 for Maestro.
  • Contactless — All new cards include NFC contactless payment, compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Important detail: Bancontact remains the dominant network in Belgium with 85% of in-store payments. The Mastercard Debit card doesn't replace Bancontact — it complements it for international use.

Where is Visa better accepted than Mastercard?

Globally, Visa claims 38 million acceptance points across more than 200 countries. Mastercard reports 35.5 million points across 210 countries (source: respective networks, 2025). More merchants for Visa, more countries for Mastercard.

DestinationBetter acceptanceNotable difference

JapanVisaHistorically more established than Mastercard
EuropeTieIdentical acceptance in 99% of cases
Southeast AsiaTieBoth networks well established
AfricaMastercardStronger local partnerships
Latin AmericaTieComparable coverage

In Belgium, the question is moot. Both networks are accepted at every terminal that takes credit cards. The only restriction is Bancontact, limited to Belgian debit cards.

For Belgian travellers who regularly visit the United States or Japan, keeping a Visa as your main card makes sense. For the rest of the world, Visa and Mastercard are interchangeable.

Does insurance depend on the network?

No. Insurance and perks depend on the card tier (Classic, Gold, Platinum, World) and the issuing bank, not the Visa or Mastercard network.

Both networks offer similar tier structures:

TierVisaMastercardTypical insurance
StandardVisa ClassicMastercard StandardNone or minimal
Mid-rangeVisa GoldMastercard GoldTravel, purchase protection
PremiumVisa PlatinumWorld MastercardExtended travel, concierge, lounges
Ultra-premiumVisa InfiniteWorld Elite MastercardFull coverage, VIP services

Travel insurance typically covers claims for 90 days with Mastercard and up to 180 days with Visa (source: Selectra, 2025). This difference is worth checking if you take extended trips.

In practice, a Belgian choosing between the ING Visa Gold and the KBC Mastercard Gold should compare each bank's specific terms — deductibles, caps, exclusions — rather than the network printed on the card.

Should you pick Visa or Mastercard for travel from Belgium?

Foreign exchange fees are the real cost of using a card abroad. Visa and Mastercard interbank rates differ by less than 0.1% on average. The markup comes from your bank: most Belgian banks charge 1.5% in foreign exchange fees, regardless of the network.

To reduce these fees, the network doesn't matter. The solution is a neobank: Revolut (Visa) charges 0% up to EUR 1,000/month, Wise applies the real rate with a 0.35% margin. Our travel card guide details the best options.

If you travel frequently to the United States, Visa is marginally preferable for acceptance. For any other destination, the difference between the two networks is negligible.

Our verdict

The Visa or Mastercard choice has no significant impact on daily life in Belgium. Both networks offer the same coverage, the same security, and comparable exchange rates.

Three situations where the network can tip the balance:

  • Frequent trips to the US/Japan — Visa has a slight acceptance edge. The ING Visa Classic or Keytrade Visa Gold are solid picks.
  • You want a free premium card — The Keytrade Bank Visa Gold (EUR 0) is unbeatable. No free Mastercard in Belgium offers this level of insurance.
  • You bank with KBC/Belfius — Your Mastercard works everywhere. No need to switch banks for a Visa.

No. The new debit card combines two technologies on one physical card: Bancontact for payments within Belgium and Mastercard Debit for international and online payments. Bancontact remains active and unchanged for domestic transactions.

Insurance depends on the card tier (Classic, Gold, Platinum) and the issuing bank, not the network. A Visa Gold from ING and a Mastercard Gold from KBC offer comparable coverage. The difference lies in each bank's specific terms.

Visa has a slightly higher acceptance rate in the US and Japan. In practice, Mastercard works at 99% of American merchants. If you travel to the US often, a Visa as your primary card and a Mastercard as backup covers every situation.

Visa and Mastercard interbank exchange rates are nearly identical, with less than 0.1% average difference. The actual fees depend on your bank: most Belgian banks charge 1.5% markup regardless of the network.

Maestro was Mastercard's international debit network, limited to in-store payments. Mastercard Debit replaces it with twice the acceptance: online payments, contactless and abroad. In Belgium, the migration covers more than 10 million cards.
