American Express in Belgium: cards, fees and review 2026
Blue, Green, Gold or Platinum: how much an American Express card costs in Belgium, where it is accepted, and which tier is actually worth it for you.
American Express holds a distinct position in the Belgian credit card market. It is the least common brand in the country, yet the one that bets most heavily on travel perks, insurance and the Membership Rewards loyalty programme. In Belgium, Amex offers four cards for individuals: Blue, Green, Gold and Platinum.
What this means for you: an Amex is not a card to take as your single all-purpose option. It earns its place for travel and points, provided you accept two specific Belgian constraints: narrower acceptance than Visa or Mastercard, and a cost that rises quickly on the premium tiers.
Which American Express cards exist in Belgium, and what do they cost?
Amex Belgium lines up four cards, from €35 to €780 per year. The fee rises with the level of insurance, travel perks and services.
The Blue card is the entry point at €35 per year. The Green, at €65 per year, adds travel and purchase insurance. The Gold moves up to €240 per year (€20 per month) with enhanced travel benefits. The Platinum, at €780 per year, is billed at €65 per month and unlocks airport lounge access and a concierge service.
| Card | Annual fee | Main draw | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | €35 | Essential insurance | First Amex card |
| Green | €65 | Travel and purchase insurance | Everyday use |
| Gold | €240 | Travel perks, Membership Rewards | Regular traveller |
| Platinum | €780 | Unlimited lounges, Brussels fast-track | Frequent traveller |
A detail worth catching: on the Green, the Membership Rewards points programme is not included. It costs an extra €18.50 per year, according to the official Amex Belgium page. In other words, to actually earn points with a Green, the real annual cost rises to €83.50. A supplementary card for a relative is €30 per year.
Is American Express a real credit card or a debit card?
It is a charge card with deferred debit. Your total monthly spending is debited in one go from your bank account, at the start of the following month, by direct debit.
In practice, there is no revolving credit, no instalments and no interest. American Express states it plainly: you must repay the balance in full each month, and instalment payments are not possible. This is the opposite of a revolving card, where debt can be spread out and become expensive in interest.
This distinction matters for two reasons. First, an Amex is not meant to finance a purchase over several months. Second, late payment triggers fees and the card can be blocked. If you want to understand the difference between the two logics, our guide on credit cards versus debit cards sets it out.
Is American Express well accepted in Belgium?
Less so than Visa and Mastercard, and that is weakness number one. The commission Amex charges the merchant is higher, so a share of small Belgian businesses, cafés, bakeries and independents still refuse it.
Larger chains, on the other hand, increasingly accept it. Amex lists Delhaize, Ikea, Decathlon, Mango, Zalando, Multipharma and Amazon, plus services like Uber and Netflix. Contactless works up to €50. On the ground, though, the experience stays uneven depending on the type of merchant.
In practice, an Amex in Belgium cannot be your only means of payment. It is a complementary card, not a replacement.
Should you keep a Visa or Mastercard as well?
Yes, always. The classic disappointed-Belgian scenario is the Amex declined at the till of a small restaurant or a neighbourhood shop. Keep a Visa or Mastercard, ideally free, as a safety net. Our comparison of free credit cards in Belgium helps you pick that second card without paying a second annual fee.
Where can you pay with Amex in Belgium in 2026?
The acceptance network is widening across large retail and e-commerce, but stays thin among local shops. Before a significant purchase where you want the points or the insurance, check acceptance, or use the merchant locator in the Amex app. For online payments, coverage is good on most major Belgian and international platforms.
Which American Express card should you choose for your profile?
The right choice depends on how often you travel and how you use points, not on the card's prestige. An under-used Platinum is €780 spent on dormant benefits.
The Blue at €35 suits someone wanting to test the Amex ecosystem without a heavy financial commitment. The Green at €65 targets everyday use with a minimum of travel insurance. The Gold at €240 makes sense for a regular traveller who gets value from the travel perks and points. The Platinum at €780 only makes sense if you genuinely use the airport lounges: its unlimited Priority Pass access, priority security at Brussels Airport and dining perks pay off only with several trips a year.
Honestly, for most people in Belgium the Platinum does not pay for itself. If you fly twice a year for holidays, the Gold, or even a free travel card from another bank, covers the essentials for far less. Compare the alternatives in our credit card comparator.
How much does an American Express cost abroad?
Within the eurozone, payments carry no currency conversion fee. It is outside the eurozone that the bill grows: Amex applies a 2.8% commission on every payment made in another currency.
On a €1,000 purchase in dollars or pounds, that commission comes to €28. Cash withdrawals are charged too, which makes the Amex a poor tool for pulling cash abroad. For a trip outside Europe, a multi-currency card like Wise or Revolut will be markedly cheaper on conversion alone.
What this means for you: the value of an Amex when travelling lies in its insurance and points, not its exchange rate. If you mostly travel outside the eurozone and conversion cost is your priority, start with our travel cards with no fees.
How do you get an American Express card in Belgium?
You apply online at americanexpress.be, using itsme or an electronic ID card reader. Belgian cards are issued by American Express Europe S.A., Belgian branch, based at boulevard du Souverain 100 in Brussels and registered with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises under number 0776.653.759.
For the Green, the conditions are specific: be of legal age, show at least €20,000 in gross annual income, be a Belgian tax resident, hold a euro account, accept direct debit and not be listed on any payment-default register. The Gold and Platinum versions assume more comfortable incomes. Once approved, the card arrives within about twelve working days.
For the record, Amex was long distributed in Belgium through Alpha Card, a joint venture set up in 1998 with BNP Paribas Fortis. That is also why you will still find co-branded Amex cards, such as the Miles & More cards tied to Brussels Airlines, which earn miles on the American Express network. If you are still unsure which card fits you, test which card suits you based on your real usage.

No. Amex is noticeably less accepted than Visa and Mastercard, especially at small merchants, because of higher fees charged to the retailer. Large chains accept it (Delhaize, Ikea, Decathlon, Zalando, Amazon), but you should keep a Visa or Mastercard as a backup.
The Green card requires a minimum gross annual income of €20,000. You also need to be of legal age, be a Belgian tax resident, hold a euro account, accept direct debit and not be listed on any payment-default register. The Gold and Platinum target higher incomes.
Within the eurozone, payments carry no currency conversion fee. Outside the eurozone, a 2.8% commission applies to each payment in a foreign currency. ATM withdrawals are also charged. For heavy non-European use, a neobank like Wise or Revolut will be cheaper on currency conversion.
You earn one point per euro spent. On the Green, the programme is optional and costs €18.50 per year; on premium cards it is built in. Points can be exchanged for gift vouchers, gifts, or transfers to partner programmes such as Brussels Airlines Miles & More.

Sophie Laurent spent eight years in retail banking, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. She compares Belgian credit cards, from the traditional banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), starting from the official fee schedules: annual fee, currency-conversion charges, borrowing rate, limits and bundled insurance. Her rule: a free card is never really free, the cost hides in foreign payments and revolving credit. She saw too many clients sign up for cashback that didn't even cover the annual fee, and she says so.
