Credit card renewal in Belgium: what to do

Your Belgian credit card is expiring? Renewal is automatic. Activation, subscriptions to fix, Apple Pay, delays: the full step-by-step guide.

Your credit card says 08/26 and the month is nearly over. In Belgium there is nothing to request: the bank automatically posts the new card before the expiry date, with the same number and the same PIN. The real work starts afterwards, on the subscriptions side.

The renewal itself takes ten minutes. What costs you an evening is the payments you have saved all over the internet in the past three years, and the direct charges that quietly fail with nobody telling you. Here is the order to do it in.

What happens when my credit card expires?

Nothing dramatic. The bank renews the card on its own initiative and posts it a few weeks before the date printed on the front. The old card stays valid until the last day of the month shown.

The MM/YY date is not the end of your contract, only the end of life of a piece of plastic. A Belgian card is issued for three to five years depending on the issuer, and Belfius spells it out in its terms: the limited validity period exists for technical and security reasons, and has no bearing on the open-ended duration of the contract. Your card agreement continues, only the physical medium is replaced. Renewal therefore happens without your explicit consent, unless you notified the bank that you wish to opt out, one month before expiry in the case of Belfius.

BNP Paribas Fortis is the most explicit Belgian bank on this. Its official help page "My card has expired, what should I do?" runs to three sentences: you do not need to do anything yourself, you automatically receive a new card with the same card number and the same PIN, and you then need to update your card details with online merchants and subscriptions.

What this means for you: the banking side is free and invisible, the tedious side is yours. Nobody at the bank knows the list of your subscriptions.

How do I activate the new card, step by step?

One in-store payment with your PIN is enough. That first chip transaction then unlocks contactless and online purchases, which stay closed until the card has been used once in person.

What you need: the new card, your usual PIN, your banking app and a pair of scissors. Allow 10 minutes for activation, then 20 to 30 minutes to update saved payments. Cost: zero euro, standard renewal is covered by the card's annual fee.

  1. Open the envelope and check the name and date. A card sent to the wrong holder in a couple happens more often than you would think.
  2. Pay once in a shop, chip and PIN. This is the activation gesture recognised by Belgian banks. An ATM withdrawal also does the job at several issuers.
  3. Test contactless on a small amount. If it still refuses, step 2 was not registered.
  4. Go through your saved payments. Streaming, telecom operator, insurance, online shops, mobility apps. This is the long step, the one everyone postpones.
  5. Destroy the old card after the end of its expiry month. Cut the chip in two and score the magnetic stripe. A card binned intact is still readable.

In practice, do step 4 the same day, not "later". A failed card charge is rarely visible in real time: it shows up neither on your statement nor in the app, because it never happened.

Which payments break on renewal, and which survive?

The ones that check the expiry date or the security code break. The 16-digit number itself does not move at most Belgian banks. And SEPA direct debits are not affected at all, since they run off the account IBAN.

ElementOn renewalWhat it means in practice
16-digit numberUnchanged at most Belgian banksYour saved details are still partly correct
Expiry dateNewAny payment checking the date is declined
Security code (3 digits on the back)NewOnline purchases to re-enter
PINUnchanged at BNP Paribas FortisNothing new to memorise
Apple Pay and Google PayToken refreshed by the bankUsually nothing to do
SEPA direct debitsNot affectedThey follow the IBAN, not the card

This is the point nobody explains clearly, and it explains everything else: keeping the same number is not enough. A merchant storing your card records all four elements, and two of them have just changed.

Visa and Mastercard do run a safety net. Visa's Account Updater service and Mastercard's Automatic Billing Updater push the new expiry date straight to merchants, bypassing you, on a monthly cycle ahead of end-of-month expiries. The catch is that the merchant has to be signed up through its acquirer. A large streaming platform almost always is. A gym, a non-profit, a local insurer or a small Belgian e-commerce site, far less often.

One detail worth watching: the most exposed charge is not the streaming subscription, which almost always goes through on its own. It is the insurance premium taken once a year from the card: it fails quietly, the reminder lands by email among twenty others, and the cover stays suspended until the day you need to file a claim.

Do I need to redo Apple Pay and Google Pay?

Usually not. When a card is replaced because it expired, the bank refreshes the token in the wallet, sometimes before the physical card even lands in your letterbox. KBC Brussels states in its Google Pay FAQ that no action is needed on your side. Still, open the wallet and check the date shown under the card. If it is stuck on the old one, remove the card and add it again after activation.

How long does the old card stay valid?

Until the last day of the month printed on the front. A card marked 08/26 still pays on 31 August 2026 and is declined on 1 September. If you have a hotel deposit or a car rental hold already sitting on the old card, keep it until the amount is released before cutting it up.

What if the new card never arrives?

Check your address in the banking app first. That is the leading cause, well ahead of the postal service.

This one hits expats hardest. A move registered with your commune does not automatically flow through to your bank. Cards go to the old address, sit for a few days in a letterbox that is no longer yours, then get returned to sender if you are lucky. Fix the address in the app, then call your bank to request a new dispatch.

If the envelope could have been opened by someone else, do not wait: call Card Stop on 078 170 170, available 24 hours a day, to block the card before it is activated. An unactivated card is not harmless: the details on the front are enough to attempt online payments with merchants that do not require strong authentication.

How do I refuse renewal of a card I no longer want?

By telling the bank in writing, before the expiry date. Letting the card expire cancels nothing.

This is the most expensive trap in the whole article. The card agreement is open-ended, the annual fee keeps running, and an unused card is still billed. Belfius asks for notification one month before the expiry date to avoid renewal. Other Belgian issuers work on the same principle: an explicit, traceable request sent to the bank.

In practice, do it the moment you receive the new card, not six months later. It is the one time in the year when you actually think about it. Our dedicated guide covers the procedure bank by bank in cancelling a credit card in Belgium.

Common mistakes, and how to avoid them

Four keep coming back. Cutting up the old card too early, before the end of its expiry month or before a deposit has been released. Binning the old card intact, chip and stripe untouched. Postponing the subscription update on the assumption that "it sorts itself out", which is only true for some of them. And confusing renewal with replacement: renewal at expiry is free, early replacement after a loss, a theft or a broken card is charged by most Belgian issuers.

A fifth is rarer but worse: leaving the new card in a drawer without activating it, because the old one still works. The 1st of September arrives, the old card is declined, the new one has never been used in person, and you are at the checkout with no backup.

FAQ

The questions above cover the most common cases. If your card was lost or stolen rather than expired, the procedure is different: see lost or stolen card in Belgium. To compare annual fees before letting a card you no longer use roll over, use the Belgian card comparison tool.

Frequently asked questions

No. Renewal is automatic: your bank posts the new card a few weeks before the date printed on the front. BNP Paribas Fortis states it plainly in its FAQ, you do not need to do anything yourself. The only action available to you is the opposite one, telling the bank you no longer want the card.

At most Belgian banks, no. The 16-digit number and the PIN stay the same. What changes is the expiry date and the 3-digit security code on the back. That is enough to get a saved online payment declined, even though the number never moved.

With one physical in-store payment using the chip and your PIN. That transaction then unlocks contactless and online payments. Several Belgian issuers also accept an ATM withdrawal as the activation step. No phone call and no branch visit required.

It depends on the merchant. Visa and Mastercard push the new expiry date through their automatic updater services, but only merchants signed up for that service benefit. Large streaming platforms usually go through untouched, a local gym or insurer often does not. Check the recurring payments you cannot afford to miss.

Usually not. When a card is replaced because it expired, the bank refreshes the token in your wallet, sometimes before the physical card even reaches you. KBC Brussels states that no action is needed on your side. Still, open the wallet and check the expiry date shown under the card.

Until the last day of the month printed on the front. A card marked 08/26 still pays on 31 August 2026 and is declined on 1 September. Keep it until then if a payment is already pending on it, then cut through the chip and the magnetic stripe before binning it.

First check your address in the banking app, that is by far the most common cause. Then contact your bank, which can trigger a new dispatch. If you suspect the envelope was stolen from your letterbox, call Card Stop on 078 170 170 to block the card before someone else activates it.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
