Credit Card vs Debit Card in Belgium: Full Comparison
Credit vs debit card in Belgium: fees, Bancontact, chargeback rights and when you truly need a credit card.
Nearly every adult in Belgium owns a Bancontact debit card. Fewer than half hold a credit card. Yet the two are still widely confused — especially now that debit cards carry a Mastercard logo. This guide lays out the concrete differences, with figures, so you know when one is enough and when you truly need the other.
How does each card work in Belgium?
A debit card debits every transaction directly from your current account, in real time. If your balance is €500 and you pay €80 at the supermarket, you have €420 left immediately. In Belgium, this card carries the Bancontact logo for domestic payments, combined since 2023 with Debit Mastercard for online and international purchases.
A credit card works on credit: your purchases accumulate during the month and are charged all at once, at the start of the following month (the exact date varies by bank). During this period — an average of 20 to 45 days — you benefit from interest-free credit. Your current account is untouched until the due date.
This distinction has a direct legal consequence. A credit card with an instalment repayment option constitutes a credit facility, registered at the Individual Credit Register (CCP) of the National Bank of Belgium. Cards repaid in full each month often escape this registration. A debit card is never registered at the CCP.
What are the fees for each card?
A debit card is the cheaper option. It is included in most current accounts, which are free or charged at €1–4 per month depending on the bank. ATM withdrawals within your own network are free. Abroad, expect €0–2 per withdrawal in the eurozone.
A credit card adds a separate annual fee.
| Card type | Annual fee | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Beobank Mastercard Classic | €5 | Deferred payment, €2,500 limit |
| Belfius Mastercard New | ~€23 | Deferred payment, Apple Pay |
| ING Visa Classic | ~€27 | Deferred payment, Visa Secure |
| KBC Mastercard Gold | ~€72 | Travel insurance, €5,000 limit |
| Beobank Flying Blue Premium | €150 | Flying Blue miles, extended insurance |
Cash withdrawals with a credit card cost more: count on a minimum of €5 per withdrawal at most banks, plus a percentage of the amount withdrawn. For daily cash needs, stick to your debit card.

Which card offers better protection if something goes wrong?
Both card types benefit from the European PSD2 directive. In case of fraud — an unauthorised payment, a stolen card or hacked data — your liability is capped at €50 if you report the fraud promptly. Beyond that, the bank covers the loss. Call Card Stop (078 170 170) immediately to block your card.
The real difference concerns merchant disputes. You paid for a flight that was cancelled and the airline won't refund? You received a defective product from a foreign seller?
With a Visa or Mastercard credit card, you can launch a chargeback procedure: you contest the transaction with your bank, which opens a case with the network (Visa or Mastercard). The deadline is 120 days from the transaction date. This procedure does not exist for Bancontact debit card payments — you must resolve the dispute directly with the merchant.
When is a credit card essential?
Three situations make a credit card hard to avoid.
Car rental. Most rental companies require a credit card to block the deposit (damage excess). Sixt refuses debit cards in Belgium and most European countries. Hertz accepts them, but with conditions. Without a credit card, the rental may be refused at the counter, even if the online booking went through.
Hotel bookings abroad. Some hotels outside the eurozone block a guarantee amount on your card. A debit card may work, but the amount is actually debited then refunded, which ties up your money. A credit card performs a simple pre-authorisation without touching your balance.
International online shopping. US and Asian websites rarely accept Bancontact. A Visa or Mastercard — credit or Debit Mastercard — is required. A credit card adds chargeback protection in case of a dispute.
Debit Mastercard: the confusion to avoid
Since 2023, Belgian banks have been progressively replacing Maestro cards with Debit Mastercard cards. Your debit card now carries a Mastercard logo, making it look very similar to a credit card.
The distinction remains clear. The word "Debit" appears on the card. Debiting is instant. No deferred payment, no credit limit independent of your balance, no CCP registration. The only change: this card now works for online payments and abroad, where Maestro was often refused.
Bancontact processed 2.5 billion transactions in 2024, including 382 million online — a 19.7% increase compared to 2023. The transition to Debit Mastercard narrows the acceptance gap between debit and credit, without making them equivalent.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a credit card and a debit card in Belgium?
A debit card debits each payment from your account in real time. A credit card pools the month's spending and charges it all at once, 20 to 45 days later. In Belgium, the debit card is linked to Bancontact (and Debit Mastercard), while the credit card is issued by Visa or Mastercard through your bank.
Can you pay online with a Bancontact debit card?
Yes. Bancontact is accepted on the majority of Belgian websites and, since the transition to Debit Mastercard, on foreign websites accepting Mastercard. In 2024, Bancontact processed 382 million online payments, a 19.7% increase year on year.
Is a debit card enough to rent a car?
Not at all rental companies. Sixt requires a credit card in Belgium and most European countries. Hertz accepts debit cards under conditions. The refusal happens at the counter, not at the time of online booking.
Which card offers the best fraud protection?
Both benefit from the same PSD2 protection: a maximum €50 deductible for fraud reported promptly. A credit card adds the chargeback procedure for merchant disputes (product not received, service cancelled), which is not available with Bancontact.
Are Revolut and N26 cards credit cards?
No. They are prepaid debit cards. They debit your balance immediately, with no credit line. They carry a Visa or Mastercard logo for wide acceptance, but without deferred payment.
How much does a credit card cost compared to a debit card?
A debit card is included in your current account (€0–4/month). A credit card costs an additional €5 to €150 per year. Cash withdrawals are free with a debit card within your network, but charged at least €5 with a credit card.
What happens if you exceed your credit card limit?
The payment is declined, just like a debit card with no balance. Your credit card's monthly limit — typically €2,500 to €5,000 — is set by your bank based on your income. You can request an adjustment from your adviser.
Do you need both cards?
For most Belgians, a debit card is enough for daily life. Add a credit card if you travel regularly, rent cars or shop on foreign websites. The two cards complement each other without replacing one another.

Frequently asked questions
A debit card debits every payment from your current account immediately. A credit card accumulates your spending and charges it all at once at the end of the month. In Belgium, debit cards carry the Bancontact logo (and Debit Mastercard since 2023), while credit cards carry a standard Visa or Mastercard logo.
Yes. Since the transition to Debit Mastercard, Belgian debit cards are accepted on most online stores in Belgium and abroad. Bancontact is the preferred online payment method for 73% of Belgian consumers.
Not always. Rental companies like Sixt refuse debit cards in Belgium and most European countries. Hertz accepts them under certain conditions. The issue is not payment itself but the pre-authorisation of the deposit: rental companies prefer to block an amount on a credit card.
Both card types benefit from PSD2 protection: your liability is capped at €50 for unauthorised use reported promptly. The difference lies in merchant disputes: only credit cards give access to the Visa or Mastercard chargeback procedure, allowing you to contest a payment with your issuer.
A debit card is usually included in your current account, often free or charged at €1–4 per month depending on the bank. A credit card costs an additional €0 to €150 per year. Classic cards start at €5/year at Beobank, while Gold cards exceed €60/year.
It's not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Abroad, credit cards are more widely accepted than Bancontact, often include travel insurance (Gold cards and above), and allow chargebacks if something goes wrong. For cash withdrawals in the eurozone, the debit card remains cheaper.
Revolut Standard, N26 Standard and Wise cards are prepaid debit cards. They debit your balance immediately with no credit line or deferred payment. They carry a Visa or Mastercard logo for wide acceptance, but do not offer a free credit period at the end of the month.
The payment is declined. A debit card cannot spend more than the available balance in your current account, unless your bank has granted an overdraft facility. A credit card, on the other hand, has a monthly limit independent of your account balance.
