Google Pay in Belgium: Compatible Banks and Setup Guide

Which Belgian banks support Google Pay? Full list, step-by-step setup, payment limits, and alternatives if your bank doesn't offer it.

By Sophie Laurent8 mai 20267 min

Paying with your Android phone at Colruyt, the local bakery, or on Coolblue — Google Pay makes it possible in Belgium since 2017. But not every bank plays along. Between those that joined in 2024, those still holding out, and payment caps that few people understand correctly, a clear overview is overdue.

Google Pay — rebranded as Google Wallet in 2022 — is the digital wallet built into Android devices. It stores a tokenized version of your credit or debit card, letting you pay contactless in stores or online without pulling out your physical card. The service requires an Android phone with an NFC chip (virtually every model sold since 2018).

Which Belgian banks support Google Pay?

Belgium currently counts 13 compatible institutions. The table focuses on the banks and fintechs you're likely to use daily.

Notable absentees: Argenta, Beobank, Keytrade Bank, Banque CPH, Nagelmackers, and Europabank don't offer Google Pay. Keytrade Bank says integration is in progress but no date has been announced. If you bank with one of them, the alternatives section below is for you.

How to add your Belgian card to Google Wallet

The process takes under two minutes. Two paths: through the Google Wallet app or through your bank's app.

From Google Wallet (universal method):

  1. Install Google Wallet from the Play Store (free)
  2. Open the app and tap "Add to Wallet" then "Payment card"
  3. Scan your card with the camera or enter the details manually
  4. Your bank sends a verification code (SMS, push notification, or phone call)
  5. Confirm — the card is active and ready to use

From your bank's app (Belfius, KBC, ING):

  1. Open your bank's mobile app
  2. Select your card under "Cards" or "Payments"
  3. Tap "Add to Google Pay" or the Google Wallet icon
  4. Confirm with your bank code or fingerprint

The bank app method is faster because verification is automatic — no SMS to wait for.

Paying over EUR 50 contactless: what Google Pay unlocks

The most common misunderstanding concerns the EUR 50 cap. This limit applies to contactless payments with a physical card (Belgian PSD2 regulation), not to Google Pay.

When you pay with Google Pay, your phone must be unlocked — via fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN. This strong authentication lifts the EUR 50 cap. Your payment limit becomes your bank card's limit, often EUR 2,500 or more per transaction.

In practice, you can pay your EUR 180 grocery bill at Colruyt or your EUR 1,200 laptop on Coolblue directly from your Android phone.

What makes Google Pay secure?

Google Pay protects your payments through three mechanisms your plastic card doesn't offer.

Tokenization — your real card number (the PAN) is never stored on the phone or transmitted to the merchant. Google creates a virtual device account number (DPAN), unique to your phone. A hacker intercepting the transaction gets a token that's useless elsewhere.

Dynamic cryptogram — each payment generates a one-time security code. Replaying a captured transaction is impossible, unlike a card whose CVV stays the same for three years.

Device lock — the phone must be unlocked to pay. Fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN. If your phone is stolen, the thief can't access Google Wallet without your biometric data. You can also remotely lock or wipe the phone via Google's "Find My Device."

According to Visa, fraud on tokenized payments averages 26% lower than on physical card payments. The weak link remains phishing — someone convincing you to approve adding a fraudulent card.

Your bank doesn't support Google Pay — what are the alternatives?

If you bank with Argenta, Beobank, CPH, or Nagelmackers, Google Pay isn't directly available. Two solutions work.

Curve (free) — this app creates a virtual Mastercard linked to your existing bank account. Add your Argenta card to Curve, then add the Curve card to Google Wallet. When you pay, Curve charges your Argenta card behind the scenes. The free plan covers everyday use.

Open a neobank account — Revolut, N26, or Bunq offer free accounts with native Google Pay. Fund the account by bank transfer from your main bank. Less elegant than Curve, but it avoids an extra middleman. Our Revolut vs N26 comparison covers the differences.

Google Pay or Apple Pay in Belgium: which one to choose?

Short answer: your smartphone decides for you. Google Pay runs on Android, Apple Pay on iPhone. In terms of security, fees, and Belgian bank coverage, both are equivalent.

The only notable difference: Apple Pay supports Bancontact in Apple Wallet at Belfius and KBC, which Google Pay does not. For Bancontact payments on Android, the Bancontact Pay app remains the go-to option.

Frequently asked questions

Which Belgian banks support Google Pay?

BNP Paribas Fortis, Belfius, ING, KBC, CBC, Fintro, Hello bank!, Crelan, Buy Way, Revolut, N26, Bunq, and Wise. Argenta, Beobank, Keytrade Bank, CPH, and Nagelmackers don't yet offer it.

Is Google Pay free in Belgium?

No Google Pay-specific fees. The only costs are those tied to your card: annual fee, foreign exchange charges, or credit interest. Google takes nothing from your transactions.

What is the Google Pay payment limit?

No EUR 50 cap like physical contactless. Google Pay requires unlocking your phone, which counts as strong authentication and lifts the restriction. Your limit is your bank card's — usually EUR 2,500 or more.

My bank doesn't support Google Pay — what can I do?

Curve (free app) creates a virtual Mastercard linked to your existing card. Add it to Google Wallet and pay normally. Alternatively, open a free Revolut or N26 account with native Google Pay support.

Does Google Pay work with Bancontact?

No. Google Pay uses the Visa or Mastercard network. For Bancontact payments on Android, use the Bancontact Pay app or your bank's mobile app. Belfius and KBC support Bancontact in Apple Wallet, but not in Google Wallet.

Is Google Pay secure?

More so than a physical card. Tokenization prevents your real card number from being transmitted. Each transaction generates a unique cryptogram. The phone must be unlocked to pay. If stolen, lock the device remotely via "Find My Device."

Can I pay online with Google Pay?

Yes. On sites and apps showing the Google Pay button, one click from Chrome or the app completes the purchase. Faster and safer than typing your card number manually.

What's the difference between Google Pay and Google Wallet?

None in practice. Google merged Google Pay into Google Wallet in 2022. The Google Wallet app on the Play Store is the one to use for payments. The old "Google Pay" name still appears on payment terminals and in everyday language.
