Apple Pay in Belgium: Which Credit Cards Are Compatible?

Full list of Belgian banks supporting Apple Pay, setup guide, payment limits, and workarounds for unsupported banks.

Paying with your iPhone at Delhaize, the bakery, or on Coolblue — Apple Pay makes it possible in Belgium since late 2018. But not every bank plays along. Some credit cards work, others don't, and the payment caps aren't what you'd expect. Here's the full picture, bank by bank, plus workarounds for those whose bank is dragging its feet.

Apple Pay is a digital wallet built into Apple devices (iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac). It stores a tokenized version of your credit or debit card, letting you pay contactless in stores or online without pulling out your physical card.

Which Belgian banks support Apple Pay?

Belgium now counts over 20 compatible institutions. The table below focuses on the main banks and fintechs you're likely to use daily.

Notable absentees: Argenta, Crelan, Banque CPH, and Nagelmackers don't offer Apple Pay. These four banks don't support Google Pay either. If you bank with them, the "alternatives" section below is for you.

How to set up Apple Pay with your Belgian card

The process takes under two minutes. Two paths: through your bank's app or directly from Apple's Wallet app.

From your bank's app (recommended method):

  1. Open your bank's mobile app (Belfius, KBC, ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, Beobank…)
  2. Navigate to the "Cards" or "Payments" section
  3. Select your credit card and tap "Add to Apple Pay" or "Add to Apple Wallet"
  4. Confirm with your bank code or biometric authentication
  5. The card appears in the Wallet app — ready to use

From the Wallet app:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone
  2. Tap the "+" button in the upper right corner
  3. Scan your card or enter the details manually
  4. Your bank sends a verification code via SMS
  5. Confirm — the card is active

At Beobank, setup must go through the Beobank Mobile app since the February 2026 update. The "Add to Apple Wallet" button shows up under Accounts > Cards for eligible cards.

What is the Apple Pay payment limit in Belgium?

This is one of the most common misunderstandings. The EUR 50 cap that applies to contactless payments with a physical card does not apply to Apple Pay.

When you pay with Apple Pay, you authenticate via Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. This strong authentication lifts the EUR 50 cap. Your payment limit is your bank card's limit — often EUR 2,500 per transaction or more, depending on your contract.

Contactless physical cardEUR 50 (Belgian regulation)None below EUR 50

Mobile payment via iPhone effectively removes the physical contactless constraint, making it suitable for larger purchases both in-store and online.

Why is Apple Pay more secure than a physical card?

Apple Pay's security rests on three mechanisms your plastic card doesn't have.

Tokenization — your real card number (the PAN) is never stored on the iPhone or transmitted to the merchant. Apple creates a Device Account Number (DAN), an identifier unique to your device. If a hacker intercepts the transaction, they get a token that's useless anywhere else.

Dynamic security code — each payment generates a one-time cryptogram. Replaying a captured transaction is impossible, unlike a card whose CVV stays the same for three years.

Biometric authentication — Face ID or Touch ID before every payment. No signature, no PIN typed on a grubby keypad. If your iPhone is stolen, the thief can't pay: biometric authentication locks Wallet access.

According to Apple, no tokenization fraud has been documented since the service launched. The weak link remains phishing — someone tricking you into adding a fraudulent card to your Wallet.

What to do if your bank doesn't support Apple Pay

If you bank with Argenta, Crelan, CPH, or Nagelmackers, you don't have direct Apple Pay access. The Belgian Bonsai app, which acted as a middleman, shut down in January 2025. Two options remain.

Curve (free) — this UK-based app creates a virtual Mastercard linked to your existing bank account. Add your Argenta card to Curve, then add the Curve card to Apple Wallet. When you pay via Apple Pay, Curve charges your Argenta card behind the scenes. The free plan covers everyday use.

Open a secondary account — Revolut, N26, or Bunq offer free accounts with native Apple Pay. Fund the account by bank transfer from your main bank and use the neobank card for mobile payments. Less elegant than Curve, but it avoids an extra middleman. Our Revolut vs N26 comparison covers the differences between these two options.

Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Bancontact: which one to use in Belgium?

Three mobile payment systems coexist in Belgium. They don't really compete — each has its niche.

In practice, most Belgians use two systems: Payconiq by Bancontact for domestic payments (peer-to-peer transfers, QR codes in shops) and Apple Pay or Google Pay for contactless payments and international online purchases.

What Apple Pay can't do (yet) in Belgium

Apple Pay isn't a bank account. A few limitations to keep in mind:

  • Limited Bancontact — Belfius and KBC allow adding a Bancontact card to Apple Wallet, but most banks don't support this yet. For universal Bancontact access (parking, some Belgian online invoices), Payconiq remains the most reliable option.
  • No built-in credit — Apple Pay Later (pay in 4 installments) is unavailable in Belgium. Apple shut down this service in the US in June 2024.
  • No ID card — unlike some countries, the iPhone can't store your Belgian eID in Wallet.
  • No ATM withdrawals — you can't withdraw cash via Apple Pay in Belgium. A few banks are testing this feature elsewhere in Europe.

Frequently asked questions

Which Belgian banks support Apple Pay?

BNP Paribas Fortis, Belfius, ING, KBC, CBC, Fintro, Hello bank!, Keytrade Bank, Beobank (since February 2026), Revolut, N26, Bunq, Wise, and Buy Way are the main compatible issuers. Argenta, Crelan, CPH, and Nagelmackers don't yet offer Apple Pay.

Is Apple Pay free in Belgium?

No Apple Pay-specific fees. The only costs are those tied to your card: annual fee, foreign exchange charges, or credit interest. Apple takes nothing from your transactions.

What is the Apple Pay payment limit?

No EUR 50 cap like physical contactless. Apple Pay requires biometric authentication, which lifts the restriction. Your limit is your bank card's — usually EUR 2,500 or more per transaction.

My bank isn't compatible — what can I do?

Curve (free app) creates a virtual Mastercard linked to your existing card. Add it to Apple Wallet and pay via Apple Pay. Alternatively, open a free Revolut or N26 account with native Apple Pay support.

Does Apple Pay work with Bancontact?

Partially. Belfius and KBC allow adding a Bancontact card to Apple Wallet since September 2022. At other banks, Bancontact isn't supported via Apple's wallet — use Payconiq by Bancontact or your bank's mobile app instead.

Is Apple Pay secure?

More so than a physical card. Tokenization prevents your real card number from being transmitted. Each transaction generates a unique code. Biometric authentication (Face ID or Touch ID) blocks access if stolen. No tokenization fraud has been documented to date.

Can I use Apple Pay for online purchases?

Yes. On sites and apps showing the Apple Pay button, a double-click on the iPhone's side button followed by Face ID completes the purchase. Faster and safer than typing your card number.

Is Google Pay better than Apple Pay in Belgium?

Both offer the same security (tokenization), the same fees (zero), and comparable Belgian bank coverage. The choice depends on your device: iPhone for Apple Pay, Android for Google Pay.

Frequently asked questions

BNP Paribas Fortis, Belfius, ING, KBC, CBC, Fintro, Hello bank!, Keytrade Bank, Beobank (since February 2026), Revolut, N26, Bunq, Wise, and Buy Way. Argenta, Crelan, CPH, and Nagelmackers still do not support Apple Pay.

Yes. Neither Apple nor Belgian banks charge fees for using Apple Pay. The only costs are those tied to your credit card: annual fee, foreign exchange charges outside the eurozone, and interest on deferred payments. Apple Pay itself is free.

Apple Pay has no fixed cap. Unlike contactless payments with a physical card (limited to EUR 50), Apple Pay transactions are capped only by your bank card limit. Some older terminals may reject amounts above EUR 50 via contactless, but this is increasingly rare.

Curve is the main alternative. This free app creates a virtual Mastercard linked to your existing account (Argenta, Crelan, etc.). Add the Curve card to Apple Wallet and pay via Apple Pay. The Belgian Bonsai app, which offered a similar service, shut down in January 2025.

Partially. Since September 2022, Belfius and KBC allow adding a Bancontact card to Apple Wallet. At other banks, Bancontact is not supported via Apple Pay — use the Payconiq by Bancontact app or your banking app instead.

Yes. Apple Pay uses tokenization: your real card number is never transmitted to the merchant. Each transaction generates a unique code. Authentication relies on Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode — no signature or shared PIN. If your iPhone is stolen, nobody can pay without your biometric data.

Yes. Websites and apps displaying the Apple Pay button accept payment via Touch ID, Face ID, or a double-click on the Apple Watch. It is faster than typing card details manually and more secure thanks to tokenization.

Both offer the same security and fees (zero). Belgian bank coverage is comparable. The choice depends on your smartphone: iPhone for Apple Pay, Android for Google Pay.
