Credit Card Lost or Stolen in Belgium: What to Do
Card Stop, app blocking, replacement, PSD2 rights and emergency steps abroad — your step-by-step guide if your card is lost or stolen.
In 2023, Card Stop received 775,362 blocking calls in Belgium — over 2,100 per day. Whether you left your card at a restaurant (61% of cases), fell victim to online fraud (26%) or had your wallet stolen (13%), the procedure is well-established. Worldline, which operates Card Stop for all roughly 19 million Belgian bank cards, blocks the card within minutes. This guide covers every step, from the initial block to receiving your replacement card — including what Belgian law provides if fraudulent payments were made in the meantime.
How do you block your card immediately?
Two channels, one reflex: block first, think later.
Card Stop (078 170 170). Worldline's centralised service blocks all cards issued in Belgium — Visa, Mastercard, Bancontact — in a single call. Available 24/7 in French, Dutch and English. The call costs the standard local rate, no surcharge. The operator assigns you a case number: write it down, as it serves as timestamped proof of the block. From abroad, dial +32 78 170 170.
Your bank's mobile app. In parallel or while waiting for Card Stop, most Belgian banking apps allow instant temporary blocking.
| Bank | Block via app | Unblock possible | Permanent block via app |
|---|---|---|---|
| ING | Yes | Yes | No — Card Stop |
| BNP Paribas Fortis | Yes | Yes | No — Card Stop |
| KBC | Yes | Yes | No — Card Stop |
| Belfius | Yes | Yes | No — Card Stop |
| Beobank | Yes | No | No — Card Stop |
| Argenta | Yes | Yes | No — Card Stop |
Blocking via the app is temporary and reversible: if you find your card in your coat lining, you can reactivate it. The Card Stop block is permanent — you need to order a new card. That is why the logical sequence is: block in the app first (reversible), then call Card Stop if the doubt is confirmed (irreversible).
What to do after blocking?
Blocking stops new payments, but the process does not end there. Three steps follow.
Check your recent transactions. Open your bank's app and review the last 48 hours of activity. Look for any payment you did not make. Small contactless payments (under 50 EUR) are the most common after a theft, as they do not require a PIN code.
Contact your bank. Report suspicious transactions by phone or through the app's chat feature. The bank opens a dispute file and initiates a chargeback with Visa or Mastercard if needed. They will also send you a declaration form to complete. Request a replacement card during the same call.
File a police report. Go to your local police station with your Card Stop case number, your ID and the list of suspicious transactions. The police report strengthens your file with the bank. If you are abroad, file a report with the local police and have it translated upon your return if necessary.
How much does a replacement card cost?
Replacement is not free everywhere. Here is what the main Belgian banks charge in 2026.
| Bank | Replacement cost | Delivery time | Temporary card at branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| ING | 5 – 10 EUR | 7 – 10 days | No |
| BNP Paribas Fortis | 7 – 12 EUR | 5 – 8 days | No |
| KBC | 5 – 10 EUR | 5 – 7 days | Yes (provisional card) |
| Belfius | 5 – 10 EUR | 5 – 10 days | Yes (provisional card) |
| Beobank | 5 EUR | 7 – 10 days | No |
| Argenta | 5 – 10 EUR | 7 – 10 days | No |
| Keytrade Bank | 0 EUR | 7 – 10 days | No (online bank) |
| Crelan | 5 – 10 EUR | 7 – 10 days | Yes |
The PIN code is sent separately in a second envelope, 2 to 3 days after the card. This security measure prevents someone intercepting your mail from having both the card and the code. At some banks (KBC, Belfius), you can set a new PIN directly in the app once you receive the physical card.
If you had set up Apple Pay or Google Pay before the loss, your virtual card remains usable on your smartphone as long as the physical card number has not been permanently blocked. After replacement, you will need to add the new card to your digital wallet.
What are your rights if fraudulent payments were made?
The Belgian Code of Economic Law (Article VII.44), which transposes the PSD2 directive, protects cardholders.
Before blocking: your liability is capped at 50 euros. Even if a thief used your card for 500 euros in contactless or online purchases, you pay no more than 50 euros. This cap applies only to transactions between the theft and the moment you called Card Stop.
After blocking: the bank bears 100% of the losses. Every minute counts, which is why blocking via the app while waiting for Card Stop matters.
Without strong authentication: if an online payment was processed without 3D Secure (Visa Secure or Mastercard Identity Check), your liability drops to zero, even before blocking. The merchant or the bank absorbs the full amount.
Exception: gross negligence. If you wrote your PIN on the card, shared your banking credentials by phone, or gave your code to a third party, the bank may charge you for all losses. Belgian case law is, however, strict on this concept: simply falling for a fake SMS does not constitute gross negligence.
Dispute deadline (Article VII.41 CDE): 13 months from the debit date. After that, the bank is no longer required to reimburse. In practice, dispute any suspicious transaction as soon as you spot it. For the detailed procedure, see our chargeback guide for Belgium.
Card lost abroad: how to react?
Losing your card abroad adds a layer of complexity. Here is the adapted procedure.
Block immediately via Card Stop international. Dial +32 78 170 170 from any country. If you do not have access to a phone, use your bank's app on WiFi to temporarily block the card.
Emergency alternatives. If your credit card was your only means of payment:
- Request an emergency wire transfer from your bank to a local Western Union or MoneyGram point
- Use your Bancontact debit card if you kept it separate from your credit card
- Apple Pay and Google Pay wallets continue working if the card was added before the loss
- Contact your Belgian embassy or consulate for emergency assistance as a last resort
Your Gold or Platinum card insurance. Belgian premium cards include travel assistance that sometimes covers emergency expenses abroad: cash advances, express replacement card shipping, or repatriation if needed. Check your credit card insurance terms before travelling — and save the assistance number in your contacts.
How to limit risks in daily life?
Prevention remains the best remedy. A few habits reduce the impact of loss or theft.
Separate your cards. Do not keep your credit card and debit card in the same wallet. In case of theft, you retain at least one working payment method. For travel, this rule becomes even more important.
Enable transaction notifications. All Belgian banks offer a push alert for every payment. You will detect fraudulent use within a minute, well before checking your monthly statement.
Lower unnecessary limits. If your card allows 5,000 EUR in monthly payments but you only use 1,000, reduce the ceiling. In case of theft, your exposure is lower. Most banking apps let you adjust limits in seconds.
Set up Apple Pay or Google Pay. Smartphone payments use tokenisation: your real card number is never exposed. And if your wallet is stolen, your phone remains a working payment method. See our Apple Pay and Google Pay guides for setup.
Save the Card Stop number. Add 078 170 170 (and +32 78 170 170 for abroad) to your phone contacts. In the stress of the moment, searching for the number wastes minutes during which a thief can use your card.

Your liability is limited to a maximum of 50 euros for unauthorised transactions made before blocking, under Article VII.44 of the Belgian Code of Economic Law. After blocking via Card Stop, you owe nothing. If your bank did not require strong authentication, your liability drops to zero.
The cost varies by bank: free at Keytrade Bank, around 5 euros at Beobank, and between 5 and 15 euros at ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC and Belfius. Delivery takes 5 to 10 business days by registered post.
Call Card Stop immediately at +32 78 170 170 to block the card. File a police report locally and keep the record. Yes. The apps from ING, KBC, Belfius and BNP Paribas Fortis all allow you to temporarily block your card in seconds. At ING and KBC, you can also unblock it if you find it again. This temporary block complements Card Stop — for a permanent block after theft, always call Card Stop.
Yes, but in a limited way. In Belgium, contactless payments are capped at 50 euros per transaction. After several consecutive contactless payments without a PIN (cumulative limit of 100 to 150 euros depending on the bank), the terminal requires PIN entry. Block your card immediately to prevent even these small amounts.
It is not legally required to obtain reimbursement from your bank, but it is strongly recommended. The police report strengthens your case with the bank and serves as evidence in case of a dispute. If fraudulent transactions were made, the report is essential for the investigation.
Expect 5 to 10 business days at most Belgian banks. The PIN code is sent separately by post, adding 2 to 3 extra days. At some banks like KBC and Belfius, a temporary card can be issued on the same day at a branch.
