Ranking of student credit cards in Belgium

A Belgian student credit card costs between EUR 0 and EUR 5 a year. The price is settled quickly, the eligibility conditions far less so: five of the seven offers in the panel assume an income or an account with the issuer, two do not. Seven products read off the issuers' official pages on 6 September 2026.

Fees checked on 6 September 2026

In brief

  • The Beobank Young Mastercard is the only credit card in the panel reserved for students: EUR 5 a year, a EUR 750 line, with no account to open at the issuer.
  • At Argenta, KBC, CBC and Belfius the credit card is free for as long as the youth package is, meaning up to 24 or 25 depending on the bank.
  • The BNP Paribas Fortis Hello4You account stays free up to 28, the longest window on the Belgian market; the Hello card itself costs EUR 1.13 a month from the second year.
  • KBC and CBC both write on their youth account page that a student without a steady income cannot claim a credit card, and point them to a prepaid card instead.
  • Any credit card signed at 18 or 19 is reported to the Central Individual Credit Register within two working days of the contract being signed.

    Beobank Young Mastercard

    8.6/10
    Annual feeEUR 5/year
Non-euroFX commission not on the product page, referred to the separate fee schedule
    NetworkMastercard - Beobank

Pros : The only credit card in the panel built for students and obtainable without moving your bank account. You need to be 18, hold a current student card from a Belgian university or university college, and have a current account at any bank in the country. Credit line of EUR 750, purchase insurance up to EUR 3,000 a year and Safe Online cover up to EUR 1,250 per claim and per year, at no extra cost.

Cons : In law this is an open-ended credit facility. The representative example Beobank publishes gives an annual percentage rate of 16.49% on EUR 750, with a variable actuarial borrowing rate of 15.02%, rates in force on 09/05/2025. The minimum monthly repayment drops to one eighteenth or one twentieth of the drawn reserve, with a EUR 25 floor: paying that minimum spreads the debt over more than a year.

The best pick for a student who wants a card accepted as a deposit and refuses to move their account. Provided you clear the statement every month, which the card allows and does not require.

  2. 02

    Argenta Mastercard (Green package)

    8.3/10
Annual feeFree under 25, then EUR 2/month
Non-euroNot published on the Green package page
    NetworkMastercard - Argenta

Pros : No contribution on the credit card for customers under 25, and no monthly package fee on the Green payment account. The standard limit runs to EUR 1,250 a month, above Beobank's EUR 750 line and well above the EUR 250 floor announced for the Hello card.

Cons : The Green package charges EUR 2 per transaction for a transfer or a cash withdrawal at the counter. A student still using the branch twice a month leaves EUR 48 a year there. One credit card per package, a fixed limit, no temporary increase: for that you have to move up to Silver.

The cleanest free offer in the panel, with no first-year illusion and no package to sign. The step up to EUR 2 a month on the 25th birthday is something you plan for, not something you discover on a statement.

  3. 03

BNP Paribas Fortis Hello4You (Hello credit card)

    8.0/10
Annual feeFree for the first year, then EUR 1.13/month (EUR 13.56/year)
Non-euroNot published on the Hello4You page
    NetworkVisa - BNP Paribas Fortis

Pros : The longest free window in Belgium: the Hello4You account stays free up to 28, where the others stop at 24 or 25. A Welcome Pack opened by parents converts automatically into Hello4You on the holder's 18th birthday, with nothing to do. Payments are debited once a month, interest free.

Cons : The card is free only in the first year, then EUR 1.13 a month. The minimum announced spending limit is EUR 250 a month, a fifth of Argenta's. The offer runs under two brands at once, BNP Paribas Fortis and Hello bank!, so you have to cross-read two sets of terms to know what you are signing.

The plan to take if you will still be studying after 25, because the account stays free three years longer than anywhere else. Budget EUR 13.56 a year from the second year on.

  4. 04

CBC Compte Plus (CBC credit card)

    7.8/10
Annual feeFree with the CBC Compte Plus, up to and including 24
Non-euroNot published on the youth account page
    NetworkMastercard - CBC

Pros : Account free up to and including 24, credit card free with it, free withdrawals, and a CBC Mastercard Prepaid given at no cost to those whose credit file does not pass. The payment method and its safety net both cost nothing.

Cons : Access to the credit card assumes you are over 18 and have an income, a condition CBC spells out on the same page. The application goes through prior approval, with no stated turnaround. And the youth rate stops on the 25th birthday.

The best card plus fallback pairing in the panel for a French-speaking student who already banks there. A student with a work contract has a decent chance; one with no income gets the prepaid card.

  5. 05

Belfius Beats New (Mastercard Credit New)

    7.5/10
Annual feeFree until the 25th birthday (Beats New package)
Non-euroNon-euro withdrawals free up to EUR 250/month, FX commission not quantified
    NetworkMastercard - Belfius

Pros : The highest spending limit in the panel, EUR 1,900 a month on the Mastercard Credit New, and two cards included in the package. Withdrawals in local currency outside the euro zone are free up to EUR 250 a month. No excess to pay in case of fraud, and an emergency replacement card.

Cons : The free status ends on the 25th birthday and the package jumps straight to EUR 5.50 a month, of which EUR 1.93 is the Mastercard payment service. If the account has two holders, all of them must be under 25 for the rate to hold. A third card costs EUR 0.96 a month.

The card to take for an Erasmus term, because a EUR 1,900 monthly ceiling absorbs a housing deposit without argument. The step from EUR 0 to EUR 66 on the 25th birthday is the steepest of the seven.

  6. 06

KBC Compte Plus (KBC credit card)

    7.2/10
Annual feeFree with the KBC Compte Plus, from 10 to 24
Non-euroNot published on the youth account page
    NetworkMastercard - KBC

Pros : Two personalised debit cards, a credit card free with the account, and spending limits the holder adjusts from the app from 18. The KBC Budget Facility allows the youth account to go temporarily below zero.

Cons : The KBC Prepaid Card, presented by the bank itself as the alternative for a student without a steady income, costs EUR 1 a month. At CBC, a brand of the same group, the same prepaid card is free. Twelve euros a year of difference on the very product both banks recommend to the same profile.

Identical to CBC on the credit card, dearer on the fallback. A student with no income hesitating between the group's two brands has a costed reason to pick the French-speaking one.

  7. 07

    Revolut Standard

    6.4/10
Annual feeFree (EUR 7.99 standard local delivery)
Non-euro0% up to EUR 1,000 of FX per month, then 1%
    NetworkVisa - Revolut

Pros : No income check, no credit approval, no entry in the Central Individual Credit Register. The account opens from a phone in minutes. FX is free up to EUR 1,000 a month and withdrawals up to EUR 200 or five operations per rolling month, then 2% with a EUR 1 minimum.

Cons : This is a debit card rather than a credit card: no deferred payment, and no deposit hold accepted by a car rental firm or a hotel. The first physical card is free, but standard local delivery costs EUR 7.99 and a replacement EUR 6. Beyond the quota, the fair-use fee moved from 0.5% to 1% in the Belgian terms effective 9 July 2026.

Every student's backup card, worth keeping as a second payment method abroad. It will not stand in for a credit card the day a rental desk asks for an imprint.

Can a student with no income get a credit card in Belgium?

Two banks answer no on their own website, and sell a free credit card on the same page. At the foot of their youth account page, read on 6 September 2026, KBC and CBC write that a student has no steady income, depends financially on their parents, and will generally be refused a credit card. Four lines above, a table advertises the Compte Plus with a free credit card. Both statements hold together because the second assumes an income, but you have to read both blocks to work that out.

Beobank takes the other route. Its Young Mastercard is granted at 18 on presentation of a current student card from a Belgian university or university college, with a current account at any bank in the country, and the bank states that parents need not be present. The application still goes through credit approval.

The legal frame does not change from one issuer to the next. Book VII of the Belgian Code of Economic Law requires the lender to check the applicant's repayment capacity and to consult the Central Individual Credit Register before granting credit. A student job under contract, a regularly paid grant or an allowance count as income. Pocket money from parents does not.

The Beobank application runs in this order. 1) Check that you are 18 and currently enrolled at a Belgian university or university college. 2) Gather your identity card and your student card for the current year. 3) Fill in the online form on the product page, or go into a branch. 4) Wait for approval before the card is issued.

This site's guide to student cards sets out the file to build bank by bank and the documents to gather. This ranking does something else: it scores seven offers on eligibility and on the real twelve-month cost, and says which one passes when the income is missing.

What does a student card really cost over twelve months?

Zero euros at four of the seven issuers, for as long as the youth package applies. Argenta, KBC, CBC and Belfius charge nothing for the credit card of a customer under 25, and nothing for the account that carries it.

The bill gets complicated as soon as you leave the advertised price. Argenta takes no monthly package fee on Green, but charges EUR 2 for every transfer and every cash withdrawal at the counter, so a student still using the branch twice a month pays EUR 48 a year more than one who does everything in the app. Belfius includes two Mastercards in the Beats New package, the third costs EUR 0.96 a month. BNP Paribas Fortis gives the Hello card free for the first year, then EUR 1.13 a month, or EUR 13.56 over twelve months.

Beobank's EUR 5 a year remains the only straightforward price in the panel. It applies from year one, it depends on no account being opened, and the bank pays EUR 5 onto the card account after the first purchase, for any application filed up to 30 November 2026 and a first purchase made within three months of the card being granted.

If I were 19, I would pay that EUR 5 rather than chase the free offers. Moving a student account to a new bank costs an afternoon of direct debits, codes and phone calls, and the youth rate ends at 24 or 25 in any case. Five euros a year buy the right to stop thinking about it.

The FX commission is missing from every Belgian bank youth page

None of the official pages read on 6 September 2026 at Argenta, KBC, CBC, BNP Paribas Fortis and Beobank puts a figure on the commission applied to a payment made outside the euro zone.

Belfius comes close without getting there. The Beats New page announces free withdrawals up to EUR 250 a month in local currency outside the euro zone, then refers in a footnote to possible local bank fees and possible exchange fees, with no amount and no percentage.

Beobank publishes its commission elsewhere, in a separate fee schedule and in a document dedicated to payments in other currencies. So the figure exists, it is simply not where the student looks for it, namely on the page of the product being sold to them.

Revolut is the only one in the panel to write its rate on the page that concerns it: FX free up to EUR 1,000 a month, then a 1% fair-use fee. That rate stood at 0.5% before, and the Belgian terms read on 6 September 2026 carry an effective date of 9 July 2026.

ING is not in this ranking. On 6 September 2026, neither the youth credit card page nor the youth account page on ing.be returned readable content without running scripts, exactly the obstacle met in August on the business cards. A card whose price I cannot read on an issuer source does not enter a ranking on this site.

So I could not compare that line, and it is the most awkward gap in this piece. For a student on an Erasmus term paying in a foreign currency for six months, the FX commission weighs more than the annual fee of all seven cards combined.

What happens on the day the youth rate ends?

The adult tariff applies, all at once, with no transition.

At Belfius the step is the steepest in the panel: the Beats New package is free until the 25th birthday, then EUR 5.50 a month, of which EUR 1.93 is the Mastercard payment service. That is EUR 66 a year where there was nothing the day before.

Argenta moves to EUR 2 a month for the card on the 25th birthday, KBC and CBC end the free Compte Plus after 24, and BNP Paribas Fortis keeps Hello4You free up to 28. That date is worth comparing before the birthday, while leaving still costs nothing.

What trace does a credit card leave when you sign it at 19?

An entry in the Central Individual Credit Register, within two working days of the contract being signed.

The National Bank's register records every consumer credit and every mortgage credit taken out by natural persons for private purposes, together with the payment defaults attached to them. Its legal basis rests on the Code of Economic Law and on the Royal Decree of 23 March 2017. Every lender is legally required to consult it before granting a loan, which includes the bank that will look at your mortgage file ten years later.

Retention periods decide the rest. A contract that runs normally is deleted at the latest three months and eight days after it matures. A regularised payment default stays one year from the date of regularisation, and ten years from the first default if it is never regularised.

Beobank's credit facility deserves particular attention here. Its representative example gives an annual percentage rate of 16.49% on a EUR 750 line, rates in force on 09/05/2025, and the minimum monthly repayment can drop to one eighteenth or one twentieth of the drawn reserve, with a EUR 25 floor. Paying that minimum means carrying a debt charged at 16.49% for more than a year, on an amount a student normally clears in two months if they think about it.

Any natural person can consult free of charge the data recorded in their name at the National Bank, and ask for a correction of any entry they can prove wrong. If a disagreement with the issuer persists, Ombudsfin handles banking disputes free of charge. And if repayments become difficult, an approved debt mediation service or the local public welfare centre step in well before the file moves to the negative section of the register.

Frequently asked questions

Can a student get a credit card in Belgium?

Yes from 18, but rarely without an income. Beobank issues its Young Mastercard on presentation of a student card from a Belgian university or university college, without requiring an account with them. KBC and CBC write on their youth account page that a student without a steady income will generally be refused a credit card, and offer a prepaid card instead.

Which credit card is cheapest for a Belgian student?

The cards from Argenta, KBC, CBC and Belfius cost EUR 0 for as long as the youth package applies. The Beobank Young Mastercard costs EUR 5 a year, checked on 6 September 2026, but it does not require opening an account at the issuer: over twelve months it often works out cheaper than switching bank.

Do you need an income to get a credit card as a student?

The lender must check your repayment capacity before granting credit and consult the Central Individual Credit Register. A student job under contract, a grant or a regular allowance support the file. With no income at all the application is usually refused, and the issuer steers you towards a prepaid or debit card.

Up to what age does a youth credit card stay free?

24 at KBC and Argenta, up to and including 24 at CBC, until the 25th birthday at Belfius, and 28 for the BNP Paribas Fortis Hello4You account. On the day the free period ends, the Beats New package moves to EUR 5.50 a month, of which EUR 1.93 is the Mastercard payment service.

Does a credit card taken during studies hurt a future mortgage?

The contract is recorded in the National Bank's Central Individual Credit Register within two working days of signing, and every lender is legally required to consult that register before granting a loan. A contract that runs normally is deleted at the latest three months and eight days after it matures. A payment default that is never regularised stays ten years.

Credit card or prepaid card for a student?

A prepaid card is topped up and cannot go negative, which suits a tight budget and a first payment method. It is refused for most car rental and hotel deposits. The CBC Mastercard Prepaid is free, the KBC Prepaid Card costs EUR 1 a month.

Is Revolut enough while studying?

For paying and converting currency, yes: no income check and an account open in minutes. For a deposit hold at a rental desk or a hotel, no, because it is a debit card. On Revolut Standard, FX is free up to EUR 1,000 a month then charged at 1%, under the Belgian terms in force since 9 July 2026.
