How much does a credit card cost in Belgium?
Annual fee, exchange margin, cash withdrawals, interest: the real yearly bill of a Belgian card, worked out line by line from the Belfius, KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis price lists.
A Belgian credit card costs between 12 and 170 euros a year in fees, and the fee is only the first line of the bill. Currency conversion, cash withdrawals and interest are added on top depending on how you use it. A stay-at-home holder gets away with about twenty euros a year, a traveller with around 80, someone who spreads repayments goes past 185.
The gap between those three totals almost never comes from the choice of card. It comes from three habits: paying in another currency, taking out cash, and not clearing the statement on the due date.

Annual fees run from 12 to 170 euros depending on the card
The Belfius brochure « Tarifs et taux valables pour la clientèle privée », in force since 1 February 2026, prices its cards by the month. The Mastercard Credit New costs 1.93 euros a month, so 23.16 euros a year. The Mastercard Credit Star moves to 3.66 euros, so 43.92 euros. The Visa Gold to 4.18 euros, so 50.16 euros. The Mastercard Platinum tops out at 14.19 euros a month, so 170.28 euros a year. A second card on the same account costs exactly half.
At BNP Paribas Fortis, the price list for retail customers puts the Visa Classic and the Mastercard Classic at 2.25 euros a month, so 27 euros a year, and the Gold versions at 4.25 euros, so 51 euros.
I opened that document on 29 August 2026. Its header reads « Tarifs en vigueur à partir du 25/10/2022 », meaning prices in force from 25 October 2022. This is the official price list of the largest retail bank in the country, and it carries an effective date almost four years old. I quote it because it is the only source the issuer publishes, but I cannot guarantee a branch will apply those amounts today.
At KBC the logic changes shape. The KBC credit card product page charges 5.25 euros a month for the KBC Plus Account and Silver card together, of which 4.25 euros for the account and 1 euro for the card. The Gold version rises to 8.25 euros, of which 4 euros for the card. Twelve euros a year for the cheapest card in the panel, forty-eight for the Gold, provided you accept the account that comes with it.
Three price lists, three ways of presenting the same product. The legal regime common to all these cards is set out in our guide to how credit cards work in Belgium.
What does a card « included » in a banking package really cost?
About 19 euros a year at Belfius, and the figure sits in the February 2026 brochure without any issuer pointing at it.
The Beats New account costs 5.50 euros a month from age 25 when it carries a Mastercard or Visa card, and 3.90 euros a month when it does not. The difference is 1.60 euros a month. Over twelve months, the card « included in the package » therefore comes to 19.20 euros. It is cheaper than the same card taken on its own at 23.16 euros, but it is not free, and the package says so nowhere.
The sharpest contradiction I found was at KBC, on 29 August 2026. One page of the site states that the KBC credit card is free with a KBC Base Account or a KBC Plus Account. Another page on the same site, the one detailing the ranges, charges the Silver at 1 euro a month on top of the 4.25 euros for the Plus Account. Both pages were online at the same time. I do not know which one governs at the counter, and that is exactly the kind of blur that makes a fee comparison unreliable.
The full mechanics of packages are covered in our article on the credit card included in a bank package, and the landscape of no-fee offers in the one on the free credit card.
How much does currency conversion cost outside the euro area?
Between 1.50 and 1.60% of the amount at the issuers that publish their rate.
Belfius applies « une marge de change de 1,50 % », an exchange margin of 1.50% against the reference rate on the day the transaction is processed, with the European Central Bank rate serving as reference for European Economic Area currencies. KBC states an exchange commission of 1.6% on its product pages. On 3,000 euros of annual spending outside the euro area, the gap between the two comes to 3 euros. Next to nothing.
The item itself is anything but small: 45 euros at Belfius, 48 at KBC, for the same spending. Nearly double the annual fee of a Mastercard Credit New.
My calculation stops dead at BNP Paribas Fortis, and that annoys me. Its price list does mention conversion into euros at the European Central Bank rate « avec application d'une marge de change », with an exchange margin applied, without ever publishing the percentage of that margin. The heaviest item in a traveller's budget therefore stays a hole in my table, at the largest Belgian issuer.
The transparency duty does exist. Regulation (EU) 2019/518 requires currency conversion charges to be expressed as a percentage mark-up over European Central Bank exchange rates. The definitions of the exchange margin and of dynamic currency conversion are set out in our glossary of fees, and everyday card use abroad in our guide to paying abroad.
Why is an ATM withdrawal the most expensive item?
Because it combines a flat charge with a percentage, and the flat charge crushes small amounts.
Belfius charges 5 euros plus 1% of the amount withdrawn, on all its payment accounts. BNP Paribas Fortis charges 6 euros plus 1%. KBC takes 1% with a 5 euro minimum at an ATM, and 2% with the same minimum at a bank counter or a bureau de change abroad. Withdrawing 100 euros therefore costs 6 euros at Belfius, 7 euros at BNP Paribas Fortis, 5 euros at KBC. Between 5 and 7% of the amount, on an operation that takes ten seconds.
My own position is settled: I never take cash out with a credit card, ever, not even in an emergency. A debit card at a euro area ATM does the same thing for nothing at most Belgian issuers, and the cost gap passes the card's annual fee after four withdrawals.
Belfius offers an interesting and widely misread exception. On the Mastercard New, Star, Platinum and Private, withdrawals booked in a currency other than the euro are included in the package up to 250 euros a month. Beyond that, the normal price returns. But the brochure adds a line few holders read: a withdrawal booked in euros costs 5 euros plus 1%, with no allowance at all.
Accepting the conversion into euros offered by a foreign ATM therefore forfeits the allowance and pays for a more expensive conversion on top. The trap closes on a screen, in three seconds, in Marrakesh as in Istanbul. Withdrawal costs by issuer are detailed in our guide to cash withdrawals with a credit card.
Spreading 1,500 euros over a year costs 164 euros in interest
The February 2026 Belfius brochure publishes, for its Budgetline revolving credit facility with card, an APR of 14.50% and an annual debit rate of 14.22%, with a minimum monthly repayment of 6% of the outstanding balance and a floor of 25 euros.
Applied to a 1,500 euro balance repaid at the minimum, that rate produces 164.36 euros of interest over twelve months. At the end of the year, 822.28 euros are still owed. Interest then weighs 7.1 times the annual fee of a Mastercard Credit New. On a 1,000 euro balance the interest bill falls to 109.58 euros; on 2,000 euros it climbs to 219.15 euros.
The mechanism is worth a close look, because it runs against intuition. The 6% minimum repayment applies to the outstanding balance, interest included, so it shrinks as the capital falls back: the first instalment is close to 91 euros, the sixth drops to 70.89 euros, the twelfth to 52.49 euros. Every euro of capital is repaid later than the one before, and every month of delay is charged at the same rate. After twelve instalments, 54.8% of the starting capital is still there.
The rate itself does not move.
One fact the sector never highlights deserves a place here. On 1 December 2025 several statutory maximum APRs on consumer credit fell by one percentage point for instalment loans and instalment sales above 5,000 euros. The ceilings applying to revolving credit facilities, which is precisely what a credit card with spread repayment is, stayed unchanged. The FPS Economy press release of 27 November 2025 says so in plain terms, and the new maxima were published in the Belgian Official Gazette of 8 October 2025. Card credit stayed expensive while ordinary credit got cheaper.
If the balance grows from one month to the next instead of falling, the question is no longer about pricing. An accredited debt mediation service or the CPAS, the public welfare centre of your municipality, handle those files free of charge, and that is where to turn before signing anything else. The rates Belgian issuers actually apply are collected in our guide to interest rates, and repayment arrangements in the one on credit card repayment.
How do you calculate your own yearly bill in six steps?
Allow thirty minutes, last year's account statements and your bank's price brochure.
- Take the monthly fee from your issuer's official price list, not from a comparison site, and multiply it by twelve. If the card is bundled into a package, compare the package price with and without the card: the difference is the real price of the card.
- Add up your spending for the year in a currency other than the euro, withdrawals included, from the lines on your statements. Multiply the total by the exchange margin your issuer publishes.
- Count your cash withdrawals made with the credit card. For each one, apply your price list's formula, flat charge plus percentage, and keep the minimum where it applies.
- Check whether you paid interest. Look for the line on your monthly statements. If it appears, this item will very probably exceed all the others combined.
- Add the one-off charges for the year: card replacement, rejected direct debit, reminder letter, paper statements. The next section gives the amounts checked at Belfius.
- Divide the total by the number of payments made with the card over the year. A cost per transaction above 1 euro flags a card badly calibrated for your use.
Step 6 is the one nobody performs, and it is the only one that answers the original question. A 50 euro fee is expensive on 40 payments a year and cheap on 400. Limit calibration follows the same logic, described in our guides to the credit limit and to the credit card spending limit.
The yearly bill of three profiles, line by line
Shared basis: a Belfius Mastercard Credit New at 1.93 euros a month, prices of 1 February 2026. The traveller spends 3,000 euros outside the euro area and withdraws 200 euros four times in foreign currency, in four different months, which keeps them under the 250 euro monthly allowance. The third profile lets a 1,500 euro balance run at the 14.22% debit rate published for Budgetline, repaying the minimum.
| Item | Stay-at-home | Traveller | Spreads repayment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | 23.16 EUR | 23.16 EUR | 23.16 EUR |
| Exchange margin at 1.50% | 0 EUR | 57.00 EUR | 0 EUR |
| Withdrawal charges | 0 EUR | 0 EUR | 0 EUR |
| Interest over twelve months | 0 EUR | 0 EUR | 164.36 EUR |
| Yearly total | 23.16 EUR | 80.16 EUR | 187.52 EUR |
The traveller pays 3.5 times the stay-at-home holder without having changed card. The one who spreads repayment pays 8 times the stay-at-home holder, again without changing card. The line that decides the bill is not the annual fee, it is payment behaviour.
That same traveller at KBC would pay 12 euros in card fees, 60.80 euros of conversion at 1.6% and 20 euros of withdrawal charges, so 92.80 euros, plus the Plus Account. The ranking flips as soon as you leave the fee line behind.
Which side charges appear in no comparison table?
The ones the February 2026 Belfius brochure files outside the card section, and that land at the worst moment.
- Replacing a Mastercard or Visa card beyond the number included: 10.00 euros.
- Transfer, standing order or direct debit refused for lack of funds: 6.95 euros.
- Registered letter or reminder sent: 7.50 euros per letter, plus postage, once a month at most.
- Instant Card issued at a branch: 10.00 euros on a Classic or Universel account.
- Duplicate paper account statements: 20.00 euros per request, capped at 300 euros per set.
- Statements sent by post: 1.50 euros plus postage, per envelope.
A holder who loses a card, has a direct debit bounce and receives a reminder in the same month adds 24.45 euros to the yearly bill. More than the fee on the card itself. Our article on the hidden fees of a credit card lists the equivalent items at the other Belgian issuers.
How do you cut the bill without changing bank?
Refuse the conversion into euros offered by a foreign terminal or ATM: it costs more than your issuer's margin and, at Belfius, it cancels the withdrawal allowance. Move your cash withdrawals to your debit card. Clear the statement in full on every due date, which on its own wipes out the 164 euro gap calculated above.
That leaves the annual fee. At 50.16 euros a year the Belfius Visa Gold costs 27 euros more than the Mastercard Credit New, and that gap only pays for itself if the bundled insurance replaces a policy you are already paying for. Otherwise I stay on the entry-level card. Our comparison tool puts the price lists side by side.

Frequently asked questions
Among the three large banks checked on 29 August 2026, the KBC Silver credit card is the cheapest on the fee line alone: 1 euro a month, so 12 euros a year. It assumes a KBC Plus Account at 4.25 euros a month, which brings the pair to 63 euros a year. The honest comparison is therefore account plus card, not the card line on its own.
Yes, as soon as the transaction is booked in a currency other than the euro. The merchant's location does not matter, the billing currency does. A purchase in dollars on an American site triggers the margin; a purchase in euros on that same site does not, but exposes you to a conversion done by the merchant, which is usually more expensive.
No, as long as the balance is collected in full on the monthly due date. Interest appears only if you choose to spread repayment, which turns the card into a revolving credit facility. That is the single switch that takes the yearly bill from around twenty euros to more than a hundred.
The fee on a card used for business purposes follows the ordinary rules on professional expenses, with the private and professional split that implies. The treatment depends on your situation and on your accountant, and this page is not tax advice. Put the question to your accountant or to the FPS Finance, the federal tax administration, before booking the line as a cost.
Several Belgian issuers have moved from a single annual charge to a monthly one. Belfius has published its card prices in euros per month since its 1 February 2026 brochure, and BNP Paribas Fortis does the same. The yearly amount does not change, but it becomes less visible: always multiply by twelve before comparing two offers.
Stop using the card first, then ask the issuer in writing for a repayment plan. If the balance keeps growing, contact an accredited debt mediation service or the CPAS, the public welfare centre of your municipality, whose help is free. These services deal with the situation as a whole, which a new credit never does.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
