Notify your bank before a trip: needed in Belgium?

No call needed: KBC, Belfius and BNP Paribas Fortis let you set the card's zone in the app. Pages checked on 2 November 2026.

No, not in the sense of a phone call: none of the three Belgian banks whose pages I re-read on 2 November 2026 asks you to notify them before a trip. They expect another, more useful step that the customer takes in the app: setting the card's zone and, if needed, its limit.

Wikifin (French), the financial education site of the FSMA, nonetheless advises checking with your bank, before you leave, in which countries the card can be used (page updated on 2 November 2026). The word that counts is "check".

KBC, Belfius and BNP Paribas Fortis have moved the setting into the app

All three banks say where to click, and none mentions a travel notification. The exact route in KBC Mobile and Belfius Mobile is already in our page on the Belgian credit card abroad; this page settles the one question of whether anyone also needs to be warned.

BankWhere the abroad setting livesDurationNotification requested
KBC (credit card)KBC Mobile: Ma KBC, the card, "Paramètres et autres", "Payer à l'étranger"Permanent or temporary, no maximum publishedNot mentioned; branch or KBC Live for those who do not use the app
BelfiusBelfius Mobile or Direct Net: Payer, Mes cartes, Gestion des cartes3 months at most online, branch beyondNot mentioned
BNP Paribas FortisEasy Banking, immediate effectNot statedNot mentioned (page of 16 March 2026)
INGPage unreadable on 2 November 2026Not foundNot found

ING's credit card page returned only its metadata, without a word on travel abroad: I leave the line empty rather than copy a comparison site into it. KBC's page Payer et retirer de l'argent à l'étranger (French) carries no date, and neither does Belfius's page on travel abroad (French).

Does a card you have not flagged get blocked anyway?

Yes, if the zone does not cover the country, and the zone is a setting, not an announcement. Belfius writes that its card is used by default only in Europe and a few other countries, and that a debit card is not accepted outside Europe without the Maestro function. KBC states for its part that without activation for the United States, a credit card works on the spot only with a PIN, for a withdrawal for example. Outside Europe, activation at KBC takes effect instantly. The American snags in detail: our page on paying in the US with a Belgian card.

One unknown remains. Anti-fraud systems may refuse an unusual payment even in the right zone, and no page I read describes their criteria. I will not pretend to set the threshold, and no source says that a call beforehand would be taken into account.

My view: phoning your branch before a weekend in Lisbon is wasted time. Two minutes in the app before Bangkok are compulsory.

Belfius sends you to a branch beyond three months

An exchange semester starting on 1 February outlasts online unblocking from 1 May. For five months abroad, Belfius therefore asks you to go through a branch before leaving. KBC publishes no maximum duration, and BNP Paribas Fortis says nothing: on this point, those are two silences, not two guarantees.

The limit follows another rule. Wikifin says you can ask to raise your credit card limit temporarily for a long trip, through mobile banking, the call centre or a branch. When the bank cannot see the account where your salary arrives, it may demand your recent payslips, which hits cross-border workers and expats paid elsewhere first. How to adjust the limit itself is explained in our guide to the credit card limit.

The general frame for travel, before and during, is in the pillar on travelling with a Belgian credit card. To check in the app the evening before you leave:

  • does the zone cover every country on the route, stopovers included;
  • does the exemption run until you are back, and not only until you arrive;
  • is the payment and withdrawal limit enough, rental deposit included;
  • is a second card stored separately;
  • is the Card Stop number (+32 78 170 170) saved in your phone.

What to do if the card is refused despite the right setting?

  1. Retry with the chip, then with another card or mobile payment.
  2. Open the app: does the region cover the country, has the limit been reached?
  3. Call the number printed on the back of the card, never one received by message.
  4. Keep a way to pay otherwise while you wait for an answer.

Card Stop (French) is for losses, thefts and fraud; for a card merely blocked by the bank, see our page on the card blocked abroad, and for a lost card the guide to a lost or stolen card.

On 2 November 2026, Wikifin's page is dated the same day, BNP Paribas Fortis's page 16 March 2026, and KBC's and Belfius's pages carry no date.

Frequently asked questions

According to the pages read, no. Belfius states that its cards work in every country of the European geographic zone, and BNP Paribas Fortis only asks you to check the zone and the limits. The list of countries counted as Europe varies from bank to bank: check yours before you leave.

At Belfius, 3 months at most from the app, and more than 3 months through a branch. KBC speaks of permanent or temporary activation without publishing a maximum duration. BNP Paribas Fortis's page gives no duration.

Wikifin says yes, temporarily, through mobile banking, the call centre or a branch. If the bank cannot see the account where your salary arrives, it may ask for your recent payslips. None of the pages read publishes a maximum limit.

Nothing rules it out. None of the pages read describes Belgian banks' fraud-detection criteria. If a payment is refused, call the number printed on the back of the card, never a number received by message.

Yes, it is the one habit both Wikifin and BNP Paribas Fortis give: +32 78 170 170, reachable 24 hours a day according to BNP. Card Stop blocks the card after loss, theft or fraud; it does not set the zone or the limit.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
