Forgotten card PIN, blocked card: 12 cases in Belgium
Forgotten PIN, three wrong codes, limit exceeded, late payment, death, bank failure: twelve Belgian credit card situations and the right counter for each.
A Belgian credit card that gets blocked almost never reopens anywhere but at its issuer: Card Stop switches it off, it does not switch it back on. A forgotten PIN is replaced within hours in the KBC app, an exceeded limit is paid for in late interest, and the holder's death freezes the accounts until the certificate of inheritance arrives.
Each case has its own counter. Rarely the same one.
Contents:

What to do when the card refuses your code or does not arrive?
KBC publishes the most complete route, Hello bank! the shortest. The BNP Paribas Fortis page I opened under the question « forgotten code » on 30 September 2026 covers only the Easy Banking Business access card: it says the code is stored on the chip, so it cannot be reset, and that the replacement card costs 25 euros. Nothing for private customers on that page.
Forgotten code: four hours to choose another one at KBC
At KBC, the Kate assistant in KBC Mobile triggers a new code, and the holder has four hours to enter it at a KBC cash machine. In a branch, an adviser can arrange the same manoeuvre or have a code posted out.
At KBC Brussels, a new card delivers its code by SMS: you send to 2446 your date of birth (DDMMYYYY) followed by four digits printed on the covering letter, twelve digits with no space or full stop. The window lasts seven days after receipt, then it is a branch visit. Seven days is short for a holder who receives the card the day before a trip, and the page provides for no extension. At Hello bank!, you call the Hello team on +32 (0)2 433 41 42.
The cash machine network cash.be announced on 24 April 2025 that Belfius and ING let you choose a new code directly at the machine, after asking the bank, without knowing the old one, with KBC and CBC due to follow. The same article repeats the rule that admits no exception: the code is given to nobody, neither by phone nor through a link. Our pillar on credit card security details the messages that try to obtain it.
Three wrong codes: unblocking happens in the app or by phone
Three wrong codes block the card. KBC separates the PIN block from the online payment block, and lifts the first without a call: KBC Mobile, Ma KBC, Moyens de paiement, the card, Gérer le code PIN, then « Débloquer code PIN et banque en ligne ». Credit cards follow the same path through the three dot menu. The card regains all its functions only after a first real transaction, a withdrawal or a purchase in a shop.
At Hello bank!, the message « PIN blocked » appears on the reader and only a call to the Hello team unblocks it, during opening hours.
Swallowed by the cash machine: a temporary block is enough at first
KBC files the swallowed card with the lost or stolen card: block it quickly. The bank separates the temporary block, reversible in KBC Mobile if the card comes back, from the permanent block through Card Stop. For a credit card, the replacement arrives by post.
For the precise case of the machine, I looked for Belfius's answer: the page « Pourquoi ma carte a été avalée par un automate » returned only its header on 30 September 2026, so I do not summarise it.
Card never received: the permanent block goes through Card Stop
Again according to KBC, a card not received is handled like a confirmed loss or a theft: permanent block through Card Stop. The normal arrival time, five working days at KBC Brussels and seven at Hello bank!, can be checked in our page on credit card timeframes before you worry.
Who pays when the card is lost, found again or badly protected?
Wikifin updated its page on 31 August 2026, and the principle has not moved: until Card Stop has been called, fraudulent payments stay with the holder, up to 50 euros.
Lost abroad: 50 euros at most before the call
The number is +32 78 170 170, reachable day and night, and Wikifin writes that after the call « vous êtes couvert », you are covered. The 50 euro ceiling falls if the holder acted fraudulently or committed gross negligence. The regional setting that explains so many refusals while travelling, and that a blocked card does not help, is covered in our page on the Belgian credit card abroad, and the whole trip in our travel pillar.
Before blocking, these points decide what follows:
- a card simply mislaid at home is blocked temporarily in the app, and reactivated if it turns up (KBC);
- a confirmed loss, a theft or a card never received goes through Card Stop, a permanent block;
- a theft also calls for a police report within twenty four hours (KBC);
- the code is dictated to nobody, not even to someone who says they are from the bank;
- the hour of the call is the one that stops the 50 euro excess.
Code written on the card: the legal protection disappears
Wikifin gives two examples of gross negligence: writing your code on the card, and choosing an obvious code such as 1234. In both cases, the holder can bear the whole of the fraudulent payments, where the excess used to stop at 50 euros. Of all the possible mistakes, that one is in my view the most expensive, because it alone removes the legal protection instead of reducing its effect. The mechanism of the excess and its exception are set out in our guide to the lost or stolen card.
Card found again after blocking: Card Stop cannot reactivate it
The Card Stop FAQ, consulted on 2 September 2026, leaves no doubt: only the issuing bank unblocks a card. After a permanent block, the path therefore runs through the issuer, which replaces the card or reopens it under its own rules. KBC says a credit card replacement arrives by post; no timeframe is published there, and I am not putting one forward.
Limit exceeded, instalment missed: the contract prices the penalty
The information sheet of the Beobank Young Mastercard, reread on 30 September 2026, gives the penalty to the cent. Other issuers have their own figures, to be read in their SECCI before signing. Our pillar on how a credit card works explains why a Belgian card is legally a credit facility.
Limit exceeded: refusal first, late interest afterwards
Wikifin defines the limit as the maximum amount that can be spent per month, with common values of 1,250 to 2,500 euros, and reminds readers that a hotel or car rental reservation is temporarily deducted from the available limit. The page, updated on 14 July 2026, also states that the limit can be raised or lowered, including for a trip.
At the terminal, the transaction that exceeds it is declined. When an excess goes through anyway, the Beobank document treats it as a delay: « en cas de simple retard de paiement et de dépassement du montant du crédit, vous devrez payer des intérêts de retard », that is, in case of a simple late payment and of exceeding the credit amount, you will owe late interest. No separate excess fee appears in the passages I noted. The real margin of a limit is measured in our page on the credit limit.
Late payment: 16.52% and 7.50 euros for a reminder at Beobank
The late rate is the last debit rate plus 10%, which lifts 15.02% to 16.52% on this document. The reminder costs 7.50 euros plus postage, at the rate of one letter per month. On 750 euros, a month of delay represents about 10.30 euros of interest (750 × 16.52% ÷ 12), a little under 18 euros with the reminder, postage excluded.
The contract provides worse in case of termination or acceleration: a compensation of 10% on the outstanding capital up to 7,500 euros, and 5% above, which is 75 euros on a balance of 750. On the register side, a default is recorded at the Central Individual Credit Register from three unpaid instalments, three months of arrears or termination by the lender, as detailed in our glossary of law and players; the full chronology is in our guide to registration at the Central Credit Register.
Death, bank failure, switching banks: what becomes of the card?
Three events that seldom happen, and whose consequences are the least well published.
Death of the holder: accounts frozen, cards cut, 5,000 euros releasable
The KBC Brussels page on payments after a death is the most detailed I found. The accounts of the deceased and of the spouse are frozen temporarily: withdrawals stop, incoming transfers continue. The deceased's debit cards are cancelled, their credit cards blocked, and those of the surviving spouse too while the accounts are frozen. Direct debits linked to frozen accounts are cancelled.
A limited amount of 5,000 euros can be released to the spouse or legal cohabitant for day to day expenses. Funeral costs, energy, rent or medical bills are settled on presentation of the original invoices. Unblocking happens on receipt of the certificate of inheritance, once it is established that no tax or social debt is outstanding. The fate of the card balance in the estate is described nowhere in the pages I read, and I do not infer it.
Failure of the issuer: the guarantee covers deposits, and nothing else is published
The Guarantee Fund for Financial Services protects up to 100,000 euros per client and per institution, according to the Belfius page consulted on 30 September 2026: payment, savings and term accounts. The legal repayment deadline is seven working days. Test-Achats noted in October 2024 that of 29 banks tested, only ten had transmitted their data within the three days required.
I found no official source on the fate of a credit facility attached to a card when its issuer fails. The guarantee concerns deposits; a credit line is not one, and I am not filling that silence with a guess.
Switching banks: the service brochure mentions no credit card
The interbank mobility service is free. According to the Febelfin brochure, it runs in ten working days at the minimum and one month at the maximum, the old bank transferring the balance and deactivating payment cards on closure. Credit cards do not appear in it.
My own reflex would be to repay and cancel the card before launching the transfer, so that no direct debit goes looking for a closed account. The procedure is described in our guide to cancelling a credit card.
Summary by situation:

All pages were reopened on 30 September 2026. The Belfius one on the swallowed card delivered only its header, and no source consulted says what becomes of a credit facility when its issuer fails.

Frequently asked questions
Seven days from receiving the card. The request is made by SMS to 2446, with twelve digits run together: your date of birth as DDMMYYYY followed by four digits printed on the covering letter. After the seventh day the code can no longer be retrieved by SMS and a visit to a branch becomes compulsory.
Not necessarily. KBC separates a temporary block, reversible from KBC Mobile, from a permanent block through Card Stop, reserved for a confirmed loss, a theft or a card never received. When in doubt, the temporary block stops use without condemning the card if it turns up the next day under a sofa cushion.
No. Its FAQ, consulted on 2 September 2026, states that only the issuing bank can unblock a card. A Card Stop block therefore turns the card into useless plastic until you speak to the issuer, who decides on a replacement or an unblocking under its own rules.
On the Beobank Young Mastercard information sheet, reread on 30 September 2026, exceeding the credit amount triggers the same late interest as a simple late payment, with no separate fee announced. Other issuers may proceed differently: that is the line to check in the SECCI before signing.
Not at KBC Brussels: the deceased's debit cards are cancelled and their credit cards blocked, as are those of the surviving spouse while the accounts are frozen. Direct debits linked to frozen accounts are cancelled. A limited amount can be released for the survivor's day to day expenses.
The Belgian guarantee protects deposits, up to 100,000 euros per client and per institution. A credit line is a debt of the cardholder, outside the scope of deposits, and I found no official source describing its fate when the issuer fails. It is better to put the question to the issuer in writing before you need the answer.
Febelfin's brochure mentions no credit card. It describes the transfer of payment orders and says the old bank deactivates payment cards on closure. Allow ten working days at the minimum and one month at the maximum, and settle the credit card with its issuer, separately.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
