Credit card timeframes in Belgium: 5 days to 10 years

Delivery, debit, disputes, credit register: the real timeframes of a Belgian credit card, taken from the official pages of issuers and authorities.

By Sophie L.19 septembre 20268 min

Five working days to receive a Belgian credit card, thirteen months to dispute a fraudulent payment, ten years before a payment default leaves the Central Credit Register. None of these deadlines comes from the same place: some are written into the contract, others into the law.

And the two are not argued the same way.

Contents:

  • How long a card takes to arrive, issuer by issuer
  • The statement closing date and the day of the debit
  • The amount held by a hotel or a car rental firm

How long does it take to receive a credit card in Belgium?

Five working days at KBC Brussels, seven at Hello bank!. These are the only two Belgian issuers that publish a number of days on a page you can read without being a customer.

KBC Brussels breaks its online application into eight numbered steps, and the eighth announces the card by post within five working days. The PIN code is then requested separately, by SMS, following instructions printed on the covering letter. Hello bank! announces seven working days, subject to approval of the file, then activation by telephone through its Hello team.

Two days apart. That is the lesser of the two differences.

At KBC Brussels the card travels alone and the code is claimed afterwards. At Hello bank! the card and the PIN code leave together, in the same postal envelope. A forced letterbox then hands over both halves of the secret at once, and I cannot account for a Belgian issuer still holding that line in September 2026 when its direct neighbour separated the two flows long ago. The cardholder has no say in it: they discover the method on opening the envelope.

In both cases the countdown starts at approval of the file, not at the click. Processing an application depends on the documents supplied and on the creditworthiness assessment, two steps set out in our guide to obtaining a credit card in Belgium and in our page on the real conditions of access. Issuer grids sit side by side on our comparison tool.

When does a purchase appear on the statement, and when is the account debited?

The purchase enters a statement, and the statement leaves the account later. Between the two sits a number of days that almost no Belgian issuer puts a figure on in public.

Hello bank! does. Its official FAQ, consulted on 19 September 2026, states that card transactions always close on a fixed date at month end, and that the payment account is debited nine calendar days after that date.

The arithmetic that follows catches out most cardholders. A purchase made on the 2nd of the month enters the statement closed on the last day of that same month and leaves the account on the 9th of the next: thirty seven days of lag. The same purchase, made on the 30th, leaves the account nine days later. Same card, same contract, four weeks apart for the single reason that the spending fell on the right or the wrong side of the closing. This three stage mechanism is set out in our pillar on how a credit card works.

One line of that FAQ is worth reading twice: the spending limit becomes fully available again after the payment has been recorded. Not on the day of the debit. On the day of the recording, which can add a little more delay, and which lands exactly when a cardholder believes their room for manoeuvre is back, shortly before being declined at the terminal.

The costs that pile up when repayment is spread out are quantified in our pillar on what a credit card costs, and the payment arrangements in our guide to repayment. The rates applied by Belgian issuers appear in our article on interest rates.

The amount a hotel holds has no published duration in Belgium

A hotel places a guarantee at check in, a rental firm reserves a deposit, an automated pump holds a flat amount before knowing the volume served. The sum leaves the available limit without leaving the account.

I looked for the release period on Belgian sources. Nowhere. Neither Wikifin nor the issuers consulted on 19 September 2026 publish a maximum, and the ranges in circulation come from French commercial pages, none of which cites a text. So I write the absence rather than a number nobody stands behind. The amount clears when the merchant submits the final transaction or gives up submitting it: as long as they do neither, your credit limit stays reduced.

How long do you have to dispute a payment and get a refund?

The deadline depends on what went wrong. Two regimes coexist, ten months apart, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in the whole Belgian arrangement.

The European Consumer Centre Belgium, co-funded by the FPS Economy, puts it without ambiguity. An unauthorised transaction, a stolen card or a hacked account, must be disputed within thirteen months of it taking place, and the bank must then immediately refund the disputed amount along with any interest lost. A commercial dispute, by contrast, falls under chargeback: a parcel never delivered, a bankrupt seller, a service never rendered. The dispute form goes to the issuer within three months of the transaction, through the macarte.be portal for Visa and Mastercard cards.

More than four times as long for a fraud as for a phantom parcel. The cardholder who realises in the fourth month that the seller never shipped has no chargeback left; what remains is a civil claim against a merchant who is often insolvent. The full mechanism is set out in our guide to chargeback.

The excess, meanwhile, is measured in hours rather than months. Wikifin, the FSMA site, updated on 31 August 2026, caps at 50 euros the payments made between the loss and the notification to Card Stop, provided no gross negligence is proven. That cap falls to zero when the card was counterfeited, or used without physical presentation and without electronic identification. The steps to take within the hour are listed in our guide to a lost or stolen card and in our security pillar.

How long does the bank have to answer a complaint?

Hello bank! publishes its own grid on its complaints page, consulted on 19 September 2026: acknowledgement of receipt within five working days, stating the response time, which falls between fifteen days and one month at most depending on the nature of the complaint. If the file drags on, a new deadline must be communicated before the first one expires. Who decides what between the issuer, the regulator and the mediator is set out in our glossary of law and players.

Beyond that, the file passes to the mediator. Ombudsfin advertises a processing time of 90 calendar days, renewable by 90 days depending on the complexity of the case. Its FAQ gives a figure nobody quotes: the real average processing time in 2025 stood at 71.2 calendar days. Two further deadlines appear there, and they often decide the fate of a file. A complaint lapses one year after it was filed with the financial institution, which penalises the cardholder who waits patiently for eleven months before understanding that no answer is coming. A request to review an opinion, for its part, must be lodged within three months of its communication, after which the opinion becomes final.

One detail noted the same day complicates the picture. Underneath its own telephone number, Ombudsfin states that it can be reached only on Wednesdays, « en raison d'un retard dans le traitement des dossiers », because of a backlog in case handling. Since the procedure runs entirely in writing, the practical effect stays limited. The signal is considerably less reassuring than the 71.2 day average displayed two pages further on, and I would rather say so than leave it out.

Before writing, these points are worth checking:

  • The date you filed your complaint with the bank, since that is what starts the one year limitation period.
  • A copy of your exchanges with the institution, which Ombudsfin asks for in support of the file.
  • The web form rather than email: the mediator writes that complaints arriving by email are processed less quickly.
  • Copies, never originals, since paper documents are scanned and then destroyed.
  • The opinion delivered, which does not bind the institution, except on basic banking services.

Going through the bank first is no longer an admissibility condition. Ombudsfin advises it without requiring it, and Hello bank! confirms as much on its complaints page, writing that the mediator may in some cases handle a file without having received it beforehand.

How long does an entry stay on the Central Credit Register?

Three months and eight days when everything went well. Up to ten years when something went wrong.

Wikifin, in its update of 16 February 2026, gives the three durations. For a credit that runs without difficulty, the recorded data is deleted at the latest 3 months and 8 days after the contract ends. For a payment default, the record can run up to ten years from the date of the first incident. And once the difficulties are resolved, the data remains a further year in the National Bank database, counted from the date of regularisation.

The asymmetry is the harshest in the whole Belgian arrangement, and the one least discussed at the moment of signing. A quarter to erase a spotless record, a decade for a late payment. Consulting your own file is free and works four ways: online with the electronic identity card, by signed letter, by email, or at the National Bank counters on boulevard de Berlaimont. How the register works and what to do about an incorrect entry are covered in our article on registration with the Central Credit Register.

If repayment becomes impossible, the question stops being one of scheduling. Ombudsfin writes it plainly in its FAQ: it does not carry out debt mediation, and refers people to accredited debt mediators. The public social welfare centre of your municipality, the CPAS or OCMW, is the entry point in all three regions, at no cost to the applicant.

Cancelling, withdrawing, unblocking a code: the contract sets the rest

A Hello credit card can be cancelled at any time and free of charge, subject to one month's notice. The right of withdrawal, for its part, runs for fourteen days from signature of the contract, by registered letter. Cardholders often confuse the two, although they apply neither at the same moment nor for the same reason. The procedure and its pitfalls are set out in our guide to cancelling a credit card.

Three wrong PIN codes block the card, and unblocking runs through a phone call, Monday to Friday from 7am to 10pm and Saturday from 9am to 5pm. On Sunday, nothing gets unblocked. The deadline here is called opening hours.

Frequently asked questions

Five working days at KBC Brussels and seven working days at Hello bank!, taken from their official pages on 19 September 2026. The countdown starts when the file is approved, not when you click « apply ». Issuers that publish no figure at all are the majority.

Yes, as long as the current statement has not closed. At Hello bank! the closing falls on a fixed date at month end and the account debit follows nine calendar days later. A purchase made early in the month therefore waits more than five weeks before leaving the account.

Thirteen months after the transaction, according to the European Consumer Centre Belgium. Past that point the refund can no longer be claimed. The useful reflex remains blocking the card with Card Stop as soon as you notice, because the hour of that block is what sets how losses are shared.

No, and the gap is ten months. A chargeback covers a commercial dispute, an undelivered parcel or a bankrupt seller, and the form must be filed within three months of the transaction. Disputing an unauthorised transaction, by contrast, runs for thirteen months.

No official Belgian source publishes a maximum duration, and I am not inventing one. The verifiable rule is that the amount clears when the merchant submits the final transaction or gives up submitting it. Ask for the release date at the desk, it rarely appears in the posted terms.

You can go there straight away. Ombudsfin advises approaching the institution's own complaints service first, but its FAQ states that this is not an admissibility condition, and Hello bank! says the same on its complaints page. Watch the one year limitation period instead.

Up to ten years from the date of the first default, Wikifin indicates in its update of 16 February 2026. After the situation is regularised, the data remains for a further year counted from that regularisation. A credit that ran normally is erased 3 months and 8 days after the contract ends.

One month at Hello bank!, at any time and free of charge. The right of withdrawal is a separate matter: it runs for fourteen days from signature of the contract, by registered letter. Other issuers set their own notice period, to be checked in the general terms before counting on a date.

Sophie L. worked eight years in a Belgian bank branch, first as a credit adviser and then in customer relations, before going independent in 2021 and settling in Louvain-la-Neuve. Her work starts with the issuers' official fee schedules, from the high-street banks (ING, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC, Belfius) to the neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise), reduced to five comparable lines: annual fee, currency conversion charge, borrowing rate, spending limits and bundled insurance. Every price on this site carries the date it was checked: the annual-fee grid was gone through line by line on 12 August 2026, after Belfius moved its Beats Star package to 5.90 € a month in February. If an issuer does not publish a figure, she writes that down instead of estimating it. For readers who moved to Belgium, she spells out what a Belgian issuer expects from an applicant with no local credit history.
